Title: Can't access certain sites?
Post by: mistybear on Apr 05, 2008, 14:06:46
Not sure if this is the correct area for this, but I'm sure Rik will move it if it's not.

I'm in Australia and my ISP is TPG (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=232090) and for the last few days I have been trying to access THIS (http://pizdaus.com/index.php?sort=new) site. At first I was getting Server Not Found.
Rik helped me change my DNS and tried it again, now I'm getting this message;

The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://pizdaus.com/index.php?sort=new

The following error was encountered:

Unable to determine IP address from host name for pizdaus.com

The dnsserver returned:

Server Failure: The name server was unable to process this query.

This means: The proxy server was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL. The website you have tried to view may not exist. Please check if the address is correct and retry your request.

Please contact TPG Helpdesk or the cache administrator and quote your dialup/ADSL location and IP address if you feel this error is incorrect. If you are reporting this error to the cache administrator you must include this entire error message in your email. Without the correct details we may be unable to resolve your issue.

Your cache administrator is tpg-proxy@tpgi.com.au

I have asked on TPG's own FORUM (http://www.tpg.com.au/forum/) but they haven't replied.

So can anyone enlighten me, as all of this stuff gives me a headache.  :stars:

Oh, and  :newhere:  and totally  :conf:

Are TPG blocking access to the site via the proxy?

I don't know, how do I find that out?  ???

Hi Misty - welcome.

I notice that www.pizdaus.com is redirected to www.pixdaus.com - is there any difference if you go straight to that?

If not, try putting the IP address 67.159.29.230 in place of pizdaus.com and see if that makes any difference. If so, then it is a DNS issue

Can you ping or tracert to either www.pizdaus.com or the IPaddress 67.159.29.230?

Hi MB and welcome to our neck of the woods. :) :welc: :karma:

I think Glenn is right, they're blocking access to the site, though why I don't know. Given you've used OpenDNS and the IP address, we know it's not a DNS issue, so you need to get TPG to answer you.

Otoh - how did you know that Rik? Are you psychic? You're starting to scare me now  ;D

Well, no wonder I had no idea, and that's a rarity, the last thing I watched like that was the Muppets.

I've now posted on the Whirlpool Forum, which is frequented by TPG reps, but as it's 1.12am I doubt I'll get a reply till morning, much later in the morning.

And I think it's time I toddled off to bed as well.

Why would TPG want a screenshot?

Do they want to see what browser I'm using, seems odd to me.
Title: Re: Can't access certain sites?

I suspect they just don't trust you to get the error message right, MB. A screen shot guarantees it. :(
Title: Re: Can't access certain sites?
Post by: Glenn on Apr 06, 2008, 10:08:06
They want to see the exact error message you are getting, it may help them trace the cause of the problem, the browser would not of concern to them, but it may help them replicate the issue.

For the entire screen, hit PrtScr then copy into an image-editing program, eg Paint to Photoshop.

For the active window, hit Alt+PrtScr.

There's not necessarily an advantage, MB, it really depends what you want to capture. I use Alt+PrtScr because usually I just want part of the desktop, and that way I put less on the clipboard.

I note at the end of that thread, it seems to be emerging that the site may have been blacklisted by your ISP, MB.  I guess there's not a lot you can do about that, apart from change ISP, unless they can be persuaded to remove the blacklist entry.  I haven't come across anything on the pics site that I would consider to be inappropriate.

It's very frustrating, as others can access it through different ISP's. And I wasn't aware that ISP's had the right to restrict or censor a customers internet browsing.

Does anyone know how to use another ISP's proxy, as someone suggested from the aussie forum.

I don't think I'll keep the program though, as everything is taking a very long time to load. I'm assuming that it is "Hide my IP" that is slowing everything down.

Hide my beautifully shaped posterior sits between you and websites, MB, so does slow things down a bit. It's a not a program though, just a website you can use - handy to test routing issues.

No wonder it's taking so long....... :out: :hehe:

Sorry, couldn't resist, I'm sure it is beautifully shaped.  :leer:

Thanks, for the explanation as this is all new to me.  :thumb:

it shouldn't slow anything down that much though misty - maybe a couple of seconds - not much more. It's not a program - just a website that you visit, then go on to the website that you want. I've just looked back through the thread, and you mention "half an hour to install" - not sure what you mean by that? You shouldn't have to install anything.

I downloaded and installed "Hide My IP 2007" 3 day trial. My current location is America.

Sorry misty - obviously a misunderstanding - maybe the name of the site put you off?  ;D

It's so useful because you don't have to install anything, and you can use it completely free whenever you want. www.proogly.com is another one you can use. In either one you just type the address of the website you want in the address bar on the page. :)

Now how many members from America have I offended.  ;D

I went back to the site and entered the website, works well. I'll bookmark both of those as I may need them if my ISP doesn't sort this out.

I did get an email from them, so I'll have to wait and see......

Well, I have received a reply, but according to the fine print at the bottom of their emails, I'm not allowed to let anyone see it??

If you have received this email by mistake or by breach of the confidentiality clause, please notify the sender immediately by return email and delete or destroy all copies of the email. Now I don't wish to break any laws which could involve the forum, but if it's okay by the Admins, I'll share their reply.
Oh, and TPG's forum has locked the thread I started about this, very odd behaviour.  :eyebrow:

Otherwise, you could just summarise it for us. :)

It appears that the site is being blocked by Spamhaus.org because of
some of their unacceptable practice. The site admin will need to contact
Spamhaus to sort this out with them.

Should you have further inquiries, let me know. Thanks.

Title: Re: Can't access certain sites?

They're using an outside organisation (Spamhaus) to determine what sites to block. Spamhaus has decided this is a bad site, possibly because of the pop ups and pop unders, so it's blocked it. TBH, I think it's an overreaction, if it's true.

Do they have a right to block sites, isn't that just a form of censorship. And what are the guidelines on what sites they deem "unacceptable". Is there a an actual legal document that all ISP's have to follow, or do they make this up as they go?

I just don't understand how they have the right to block sites, well that is stating the obvious.
Title: Re: Can't access certain sites?
Post by: Rik on Apr 08, 2008, 09:28:42
If you read the small print, MB, I'd guess they reserve the right to do pretty much anything they like. How long are you tied to them for?
Title: Re: Can't access certain sites?
Post by: mistybear on Apr 08, 2008, 09:37:13
Are their laws and guidelines for ISP's, or can they do whatever they like?

I don't think we are under contract to them.

Michael is looking into another plan as our speeds are ridiculously slow.

I'm drafting a reply to TPG, and I'm going to ask them why they use Spamhaus and what are their guidelines, and Spamhaus's. Any other suggestions as to what I could ask?
Title: Re: Can't access certain sites?
Post by: Rik on Apr 08, 2008, 09:39:43
I don't know the legal situation in Oz, MB, but here this kind of thing would be covered by the small print, I can pretty much guarantee it.

Try asking what their resolution process is when a site is wrongly blacklisted.
Title: Re: Can't access certain sites?
Post by: mistybear on Apr 08, 2008, 09:49:58
I think I will ask them send me a copy of their "small print".

But it's not them blocking it, they say loud and clear that they don't block sites, they get someone else to do it.
This reminds me of dealing with my landlord, but they had three layers of BS.

If they are employing Spamhaus, they are choosing to block sites. What other reason do they have to employ them?
Title: Re: Can't access certain sites?
Post by: mistybear on Apr 09, 2008, 06:25:30
I didn't get all the answers I wanted, so I might ask Spamhaus.org. But first I'll wait and see if they do unblock it.

QuoteHi Kate,

We utilize Spamhaus to filter out websites that could possibly cause problems. They have their own guidelines on what constitutes an unacceptable site.

We have already placed a request from them to unblock this site but we are yet to hear any feedback. We will let you know as soon as we get any.

A thing to note though, if upon being unblocked, in the future, the site gets blocked again by Spamhaus, we may not be able to do much. It may have to be the site's admin who will need to coordinate with Spamhaus.
Title: Re: Can't access certain sites?
Post by: madasahatter on Apr 09, 2008, 07:25:00
To be fair, if they use Spamhaus, then what they say is pretty much true. It is up to Spamhaus to block or unblock sites according to their own guidelines. All they can do is request an unblock, but if Spamhaus decide not to, then there is little really that they can do. With this site, it may well be Spamhaus system getting a little over zealous, which they will sort out.

Found an interesting diagram on their site that explains, I think, their filtering, blocking and who does the blocking.

The thing that strikes me as odd is that an ISP would abrogate its own responsibility, and allow a third party to decide what is, and is not, acceptable. Personally, I'd be looking for a new ISP, MB.
Title: Re: Can't access certain sites?

Yes, we have been thinking about it, but I wonder where, in their fine print, do they say if they use "filtering".
I also looked at SpamCop, and they have a forum, haven't had the time to have a good look yet. I haven't had time to have a look around here yet.  :bawl:
