The router should be preconfigured, so assuming you have the SSID and WiFi password, you should just be able to search for it in your laptop or phone WiFi settings and it should connect.  All you will need to do is enter the WiFi password, which is usually on a label stuck on the router somewhere.

Anyone else got experience of waiting for a switch like this? [a bit later] Found this, which answers some of my questions too. https://forums.thinkbroadband.com/fibre/4753758-fttc-to-sogea-how-quickly-does-or-do-the-work.html

Now in the curious position of being able to access the internet on my old router but not the new one. They are investigating. (Power, dsl, and both WiFi lights on and that's it.) Happy to hear your theories. [Thinks: will I regret this? lol]

SoGEA is a DSL type thing. Even FTTP has its problems.

Well, there's weird things happening on the OpenReach network at the moment.

The PON light started flashing on the ONT box at 05:57 on Saturday morning, and it's still that way. IDNet's tech support say it's a network fault.

The fact it was near 6am is highly suspicious, as that's the usual time OpenReach do changes to their network.

And then there was the "stuck session" we had in the summer, which also started at exactly 6am (and lasted several days including an inconclusive engineer visit).

I now have the VoIP equipment and cabling ready to move the phone line off the copper pair next month, but network problems like this don't inspire confidence.

(And in Manchester a few weeks ago our telegraph pole got enabled for both FTTP and one of the AltNets. Unfortunately I still have 12 months to run on the contract with Vermin.)

Are the login details on the new router the same as the old one? Is the SoGEA a new line provided in addition to your existing phone line (which will be ceasing soon), or has the SoGEA service already completely replaced it?

Sorry, it's taken me an absolute age to see this for some reason. It turned out it hadn't actually been switched over (engineer says this happens) and further, the router needed a factory reset, which sounds more drastic than it is. For this, the odd pin thing they give you to open the sim drawer in phones or tablets is ideal.

Log in details pretty much the same, yes. I did need an adapter for my laptop as I'd not realised that, in the multitude of ports it does have, an ethernet one was not included.

Why does Openreach not recognise IDNet? I mean in one sense yes they do, but I just got a survey (because obviously) and they were asking about what messages I got from Zen about the visit.

Probably because your circuit is on Zen's backhaul. (IDNet don't always use their own circuits.)

Conversely I got an email from IDNet today saying they've got connections with lots of new Altnets including Netomnia. Now, given Netomnia (YouFibre/brsk) have just last month fibred up my local telegraph pole in Manchester, I was interested to see what IDNet's checker showed. Nope! Netomnia haven't yet been added to the checker.

(Not that I could place an order yet, as Vermin Meeja have me in contract for another 12 months.)

No doubt they do, but still, it'd be nice if they used IDNet's name.

Just City Fibre here, so it's going to be a while (= who knows how long) before we (the city generally, I mean) can take advantage of any of the cheaper full fibre deals,  leaving aside the wait time for *any* full fibre possibility.

I've asked A+A so many questions I'm wary of lobbing yet another at them! So, anyone know what a porting date is? Is it the time it takes to transfer everything or something else?

Porting date is the day of the switchover.

Well, I've set things in motion. The FTTP was repaired on Thursday last week (fallen telegraph pole) and we've cancelled the renewal of the PSTN line.

Come January, I'll be porting the phone number to A&A (who will be putting up their prices next month).

peasblossom

I didn't know that about their pricing. Can I ask where you read this?

https://www.aa.net.uk/etc/news/october-25-news/  Second headline. TLDR: Prices up by 30p/month across the board.

Aha, thanks. A news section with actual news too. Plus I found a VOIP handbook.
