Do I need one of these for running my music server,I don't think I'd use it for anything else but who knows. It looks about the size of a power adaptor with a power consumption of 19 watts

Looks like the power consumption I quoted is high its possibly as low as  5-7 watts running ethernet and a usb drive

I still can't answer your question, but interesting what a change in the OS can make, Steve. Smiley

 Thinking

It would be a very cheap way to host my forum, just load SMF on to the sd card and away you go.

I think we might struggle to get the forum on an SD card now. Wink

Thats similar to what I'm thinking with my Squeezebox music server using a usb HD or NAS share for the data.

We might get away with SDHC.

Would it need a separate external IP address?

Would it need a separate external IP address?

You give it an internal IP on your network and then open the router firewall to whatever ports the applications need.

For example port 80 traffic looking for a website will only be able to get past your firewall to the one computer configured to allow that and so that is the only one visible to visitors.

It certainly looks good for small server applications, will run Ubuntu Server with no problems.

I may get one of those  Thumbs up

Well hopefully I've done my home work, and ordered one. I should in theory be able to run Squeezebox server on Debian squeeze with the music attached as a NAS share or usb HD the wiki looks fun and aptly named http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Sheevaplug_SBS_Server_for_dummies

Well its arrived, the SDHC reader from amazon has not, maybe I can find my old one. The site with the "easy images" http://uploadhyper.com is down. So if I decide to play to day I'll have to do it all manually.
