Since I got back from holiday this morning, one site I visit regularly - http://www.toppy.org.uk - has not really been working. I found a post on the forum about some IP address changes. I just switched to OpenDNS and it's working fine, so it looks like IDNet's DNS' perhaps aren't propagating quickly enough.
Is anyone else having trouble with other sites?
I haven't had any problems till now, Seb, but that one is definitely not working. It would be worth an email to support.
Will do. If anyone else has trouble accessing any sites, try OpenDNS so we can see if there's something up with IDNet's DNS or whether this is an isolated case. :thumb:
There was someone having problems with www.neutrik.com (worrying name :)) on TB, but it worked for a couple of us.
That one works for me on IDNet's DNS, but of course if there was an issue with that site, it could just be fixed now.
Indeed, though the OP still had problems after I'd connected OK. I'm trying to find out which gateway he's on.
No problems here Seb, that Toppy site isn't working for me though.
I thought you said no problems...
No problems for me cos' I don't need to go to that Toppy site, I can't afford a Topfield. ;D
The preserve of the rich. :out: :duck:
You can get it for about £160 new these days. Of course, I paid quite a bit more back in July 2005, so it's been worth the money! ;)
And anyway, if you hadn't bought that Acer desktop that you didn't need... :out:

OUCH...
I am going to get a Humax next I think, they can be had for £99.99 delivered now.
If you want something that's great out the box, get the Humax. If you want something that is pretty average out the box, but seriously powerful if you're prepared to have a bit of a mess about (patching firmware, adding applications known as "TAPs"), go for the Toppy. :)
Have given dns a good kick, site is now visible.

Thanks... :thnks: slow to open, but is now working.. :thumb:
Only trouble I've had recently is in Int Explorer, if I do a search using any search engine, in the results are some entries at the top sponsored links I think, if I try to load them I get the site not available screen, now I accept this may be the case for some, but not for all surely, is this linked to IDnet problems? or does anybody know a cure please ?
Ps I am using OPEN DNS if this helps.

I see similar in firefox but always assumed it had something to do with ad blocking and I have never delved any further.May be completely wrong of course.

Just spotted this thread.
Another Toppy owner here and whilst I can get through on Sebby's liink to the main site, the fprum isn't working for me.
I'll keep trying. It's probably a simple case of the forum being down for maintenance rather than anything more sinister.
In terms of the Humax vs Toppy discussion, I tried both for a week, but it was the EPG being readily available at switch on and the USB connectivity that won the day for me.
No, that looks to be a DNS problem, it failed at 'looking up'. I'll drop support a note.

correct as usual Rik, just swapped to open dns and the forum loads fine but not with IDnet dns.
Thanks for the confirmation, Ted. :thumb:
I have my primary DNS set to Idnet and the scondary to open dns, seems to work for me. Don't usually have problems accessing any sites with that setup.
Interesting idea, Vit, I'd never thought to do it that way. :thumb:
That's quite a good idea - thanks! :)
Yes that does work but is slower that just Open dns, maybe because the primary IDnet server doesn't work and then it defaults to the secondary Open dns server?
Slower generally, Ted, or just when there's an issue with IDNet?

I'd imagine that's how it would work, Ted, in which case it would be slow in the case of sites that IDNet's DNS fails on.
I just meant slower when trying to access that Toppy forum. With idnet=pri and open dns=sec there is a lag and with open dns =pri&sec it goes straight in (cache cleared first).
Thanks, Ted. :)
It may be a little slower but I really can't be bothered changing dns servers all the time.
It's like spring and autumn, when the temperature is on the borderline of short/long sleeves. :)
OpenDNS is pretty reliable. I'm not sure why I changed back to IDNet's in the first place come to think of it...
Because you love us? :-*
That was it. ;)

Perhaps because for most resolves they are quicker.
Could have been, although OpenDNS is feeling faster for me now.

I recently tried Open DNS but didn't notice any difference.
I think it's much of a muchness with DNS, and perhaps the differences are only evident when there's a problem with one of them.
Technically, IDNet's ought to be faster when everything is working normally, as it's within the network.
That's true, Rik.
Mind you, that assumes you can measure a few milliseconds in everyday use. :)
I think that's the key point. OpenDNS certainly seems to be more reliable, so even if it is costing me a few milliseconds, I'll probably just stick with it this time.

Great idea. If the primary DNS fails for a particular site, how long is it before the query is resent to the secondary DNS? Is it many seconds, just a few, or milliseconds? I've no real reason for asking other than an interest in how it works.
If Windows gets a failure on the primary it flips straight to the secondary as I understand it, but will try the primary again the next time (ie it doesn't learn).
Could somebody let me know the IP addresses of the IDNet and OpenDNS DMS servers.
Think I'll have a go at setting them up as 1ry and 2ry servers.
TIA.
Jon

In and working. DNS issue with the Toppy forum logged with the Help Desk as well.
Can somebody who is just using the IDNet DNS servers please check out the link to:
http://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/index.php
IDNet reckon it's now working and it seems to be for me. Just not sure whether I've got something stuck in the DNS cache from using OpenDNS.
Thanks again.
Jon
Yes, working fine, I wouldn't know how to change servers, so I am certainly using IDNet.

Thanks Inactive for the quick response.
Not sure whether it fixed itself or whether Rik dropping them an email sorted it, but all's good now, :D
They told me it was my fault. ;)
