We tend to keep the thread to notifications as far as possible, Baz, so I'll split it off.

There were problems with certain hardware i.e specific motherboards and also a generic OS install by certain PC manufacturers this lead to SP3 failing to tell the difference between an AMD processor or an Intel thus the correct driver was not installed for the AMD (I think). We are running it on one PC and all seems well except remote desktop connection seems to be broken at present.

I put SP3 on the machine I use most of the time a couple of months ago at least and the second one about a month later. This week the Comapany gave the OK so I put it on the one I use at work.

Can't say I have noticed anything good or bad on any of these machines since SP3 was installed!

So I guess it's a  :thumb: from me.

I installed SP3 on my test machine in May this year, kept it running for a month and didn't have a single problem, so installed it on my other boxes and all the other computers I've been entrusted with.

Not a ringing endorsement I know, but it's reliable and it works.

sp3 on my main 'puter .... fine.
sp3 on my Dell laptop .... probs all the way eventually leading to complete seizure :eek4:
Managed to get into safe mode and dump it. May try again in a few months time if I feel masochistic enough.

I slipstreamed SP3 for my machine as soon as it was released. I've also installed it on several other XP machines. There have been no problems of any of them. I don't know all that much about the problems as I never had any myself, but I'd say you're safe to go ahead. :)

I waited a while as I've got an AMD processor and had heard it was causing problems but it's been fine.  I'd say it's safe now.

My PC's three years old, an AMD processor.  I downloaded XP3 last May from MS website, it took about 35 minutes to install, not noticed much difference but haven't had any problems.

Call me an 'old school' engineer if you like, but i was always told..

"never install an odd-numbered service pack from microsoft"

With that rule alone I have never had any issues so far :)

To which I would add, never install an OS until at least SP1. ;)

Just thought I'd post this about IE8 and SP3.  If it's already been posted, excuse  ;)

I've read it, Brian, but I'm not sure where. Better to have two warnings than none.  :thumb:

Yes, It seems to read that if you update IE8 before installing SP3 then you're liable to have problems reverting to previous versions of IE  ;)
