Title: Wireless Interface for a Laptop
Post by: LesD on Aug 13, 2008, 19:42:49
My son has a Sony Vaio Laptop that he has had for four years plus.
As it came it had an ethernet LAN port but no wirless option.
Can you get a USB plug-in or PCIMA card that would make his Laptop connect c/o a wireless enable router?

I have found this (http://www.usfamily.net/catalog-dsl-pcima-overview.html) and wondered if it would be compatible with his Sony Vaio. I know model numbers etc would help further so I will get back to him on this aspect.

In the mean time, however, any help or advice would be appreciated.

We have some Belkin Wireless PCMCIA cards at work for use with older laptops and they work pretty well.  I would think that almost any of these cards will be compatible with the VAIO models.

If you're son is running Vista though be sure to buy a brand / model that is certified Vista compatible.

edit * Just re read your post and realised it's 4 years old so likely to be XP yes?

I have got a Peak 802.11g PCIMA card in my spares box that I am sure will work.

If you want to try it, PM me.

Thanks for the advice Guys and your offer Alan but with the exuberance of youth once pointed in the right direction I believe an eBay purchase is in the process of being made probably right now!

I'm probably too late, but yes, provided the laptop has a PCMCIA slot (it will) then you can get a card. You can also get USB wireless adaptors.
