Title: A couple of dumbass questions.
Post by: ou7shined on Dec 01, 2006, 00:44:41
I've had a quick gander in the FAQ but I can't find what I'm looking for ( probably staring me in the face, a bit like when I go to the cupboard to find something to eat but I can't find anything for all the food that's in the way - it's a bloke thing ;D )

How do I pay for next month?
and
Where do I login to check my usage stats?

Oh and is there such a thing as an IDNetters or IDNet icon? I like to have icons for my more important desktop (web) shortcuts.

OK, go to IDNet Home Page,

http://www.idnet.net/broadband/

Right hand column, bottom item = Customer Log In.

Log in then select required option. ;)

Nice one Inactive thanks :banana2:

I've found my usage and my card details but how do I make payment?

IDNet will charge your credit card automatically

Re the icon, yes that would be a good idea.
I used to put my own bookmarks icons in on IE, but you can't do that with Firefox.

One of the administrators could put a nice icon in for us though, if they wanted to - perhaps a banana??? :banana2:

You should be able to see your payment details from the Customers Log In, as BassoProfundo has said, they will just take payment.

That's great guys. Before I came over to IDNet I read about paying being a hassle, with no DD and all. So don't we get an email asking about permission for each card transaction first?

No, if you grant a CCA on a credit card it will all happen just like a direct debit, though without the protection the DD scheme provides.

Personally, I never grant CCAs, as only the payee can cancel them.

So how do you pay IDNet then Rik?
They don't do DD.

Standing order...

So if you go over your quota?

They'll no doubt tell me and I'll adjust the standing order. Longer term, as soon as DD is available, I'll switch.

I see.
Yes, I'd do DD too if I could.

Part of the discussion I had with Tim before migrating was that I would never grant a CCA on a credit card. He was happy that I had the standing order at the 'base' price for my package and we'd adjust as required.

Mind you, I notice today that the usage predictor is based on calendar months, and my billing date is the 2nd, so I am going to have problems knowing where I am. :)

But surely you have the opportunity to do a " Charge Back " if you are charged incorrectly with a Credit Card.

I always feel safer using a Credit Card.

You can dispute a payment, but it's quite a long process (potentially), and your credit card company won't thank you for doing it too often. I agree that any single purchase over £100 should always be made by CC to gain the protection of section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, but CCAs remain, imo, dangerous - it's the equivalent to giving someone your card and PIN and hoping they'll let you have it back without having run up too big a bill.

Talking to myself (nothing new there!), there's a thread on this very subject over at ThinkBroadband, the website formerly known as ADSLguide. :)

Interesting stuff Rickbean, I did once have a problem, however I just got my bank to do a Charge Bank to the supplier, I got fully refunded and it cost the Supplier £40.

I never got charged again after that.

Was that problem related to a one-off transaction or an ongoing CCA?

If the former, and you can prove you didn't authorise the transaction, it's fairly straightforward. However, once you have given a CCA (also known as a CPA), technically you have agreed to the payee charging your card until they cancel the authority, you cannot cancel it yourself. That's why I consider them so dangerous.

It was an ongoing CCA, but as you probably know, the company gets charged a fee of I think £40 for every legitimate Charge Back made against them and they obviously cannot sustain that every month.

What you say is true, however they do have to provide the service in their T&C's to continue to take payment, the company in question clearly were not doing so.

The problem I have found, though is that CC companies will often demand unreasonable levels of proof of a breach by the payee (the more so when section 75 is involved!).

This was Activeware, part of Gio, the banks were well aware of their activities, I managed to get 3 Charge Backs against them.

As far as IDNet is concerned, I just put in my bank ( not CC )  details .. sorted.

Well, hopefully DD will be available soon now.

Is it a straight forward switch from the current payment method to DD and is it sorted by  IDNet ?

I don't think it could be done by IDNet, they'd need to send out mandate forms, or set them up over the phone. I could be wrong, but I'd be very uncomfortable if companies (and this is not a specific distrust of IDNet, whom I actually trust more than most) could set up a DD without my explicit involvement.

Just looked at Plusnet Portal, ( pass me a bucket ).  they do DD's over the net, so it can be done.

I did a DD for Crapnet over the net, so it can be done.
I actually also did a DD over the phone to a call centre in India for a credit card.
(I wonder how I'm managing to spend so much in Bombay ???)

Never saw a bit of paper for either and both worked OK.

Sky is a classic example of being able to set up a DD over the phone, but a number of organisations can now do it. Others still insist on sending out bits of paper, I'm curious as to whether it's their systems which require this, or the banks won't authorise them to do it... But then I'm always curious. :)
