Title: Toolbar
Post by: Moonshine on Jun 20, 2008, 13:03:00
Hello!

Everything going swimmingly here, except one thing.  It's a very minor thing, so not at all urgent, but is annoying nonetheless!  For some reason which I cannot fathom, my toolbar thingy (is that what you call it? You know, that bright blue bar at the bottom of the screen) has gone...well....kind of fat!  It was much thinner this morning, and now has appears to have put on some weight, and is about half an inch from bottom of screen.  I don't recall downloading any toolbars, so I am assuming it's the one that came with the computer ( :-[), so am thinking it must be IE?  I have tried right clicking the mouse on the toolbar, and have clicked into just about every option there, but for the love of God, can I get it to thin down?  No, I can't!  I really don't want to mess about removing/downloading it again, because I'm not confident in doing stuff like that.  I just wondered if there is something really simple I am missing?!!  All my little icons are still within the toolbar, so I can operate them as usual, but I just want to be thin again!!! ;D

Any suggestions would be welcome! :)

Moonshine.

Right click on it, ensure that 'Lock toolbar' is not checked, then just grab the top edge and pull it down to where you want it. Then, right-click again and tick 'Lock Toolbar'.

Hi Rik

I've tried that, and it's not budging!  There is a "Lock Taskbar" option (but not a "Lock Toolbar").  Are they the same thing?  It is definitely not locked.  When I click on the edge and try to drag it down, nothing happens!

It's okay, I've just thinned it down again!  I had it on "Quick Launch", and when I unchecked that option, back came my lovely thin bar!  Thanks for your help. ;D

They are the same thing, some days I forget my own name. ;)  I'm surprised the QL was causing the problem, but then I have my taskbar at the left hand side, not the bottom. (Most documents are portrait, so I prefer to give the screen a bit more height.)

I use the Quick Launch toolbar and Rik is right that that in itself won't cause the taskbar to grow.  You really do just have to hover over the edge of the bar and drag it down holding the left mousebutton down as you drag.

I just wonder if there was so much stuff in the QL that it didn't have room to display in a single row, Ann?

If you accidentally click on the QL separator and move it down while the bar is not locked, the Taskbar doubles in height. You have to move the separator back before the bar will go back to one line - another Windows undocumented feature !

My friends taskbar ended up on the side of the desktop once and she had a terrible job getting it back to the bottom.

Was it locked, Lona? If not it should just be draggable.

I had one of those dreaded phone calls a little while ago.  Had to talk her through dragging the taskbar back to the bottom and make it the right size.  Succeeded in the end but some people don't seem to understand the simple concept of dragging things around in windows and it's very difficult to explain over the phone.   ::)

Thanks for all your feedback.  I obviously pressed something I shouldn't have by mistake, which made the toolbar enlarge.  Anyway, it's back to its normal size, but strange things keep popping up, like a symbol of two rectangles overlapping, and when I hover over it, it says "restore".  I click it and it disappears, but then comes back again.  Also, a handwriting/drawing pad bar keeps appearing in the middle of the screen.  I don't know....get rid of one problem, create another!!  I guess it's back to the drawing board ::)

Hi,

Can you post a picture of the offending items?

Sorry, I wouldn't know how. :-[

Hit PrtScr when they are visible. Then enter a bitmap editor, eg Paint, Photoshop, and paste the results (exact technique will vary according to program). Save the result as a JPEG and use the additional options to add it to your post.

Have you got up to date antivirus installed?  It sounds a bit dodgy to me.  Could be a trojan?
