So my old pc i use as a server in the house has died.
I'm in no rush to replace it as i've moved all the hard drives to the pc downstairs, lucky it wasn't them that failed.
So in the next few months i will be looking at getting a cheap pc. Something for like £100 - £150.
Any ideas where i can get a cheap pc from with ok specs to run as a server?
Hard drive will be wiped and Ubuntu put on with apache, php and mysql being installed.
It will be used as a test server for my work and storage/backup.
It will need to be managed from another pc as i dont want a keyboard/mouse/monitor always connected.
Ebuyer mighty be worth a look, Paul.
For servers I use this sort of fanless kit, (http://www.icp-epia.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=93%22) they consume about 11 watts.
While that site is quite dear, Ebay usually has a good range of all you need, my last one cost me a total of £80 excluding drives to build.
Maybe you could look at the cheap PC (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/144979) Inactive brought last week?
As Lance says, Inactive got a very cheap PC from eBuyer. :)
Hi,
Have you seen these which already have Ubuntu?

I haven't looked at the spec but th eprice is right :)
Cheers,
Paul.
thanks for the links..
i was looking at the eSys last night, doesn't say if the hard drives are SATA or IDE.
One on ebuyer is cheaper but less memory but has a bigger hard drive. My hard drives at home are IDE but i'm looking for SATA then transfering everything over.
Paul, the eBuyer one has a Sata Hard Drive, it is a Hitachi HD, and almost silent, apart from Vista, it is an excellent, well made piece of kit.
It would obviously benefit from more memory. ;)
But for a basic server, I would have thought 512mb is plenty. :)

Agreed Lance, on anything other than the dreaded Vista, 512mb is ample. >:D ;D
Good job i'll be putting Ubuntu on then ;) i would never run Vista on 512mb, i wouldn't even run XP on that but a server, 512mb is fine for now.
Well the machine itself is fine @ £144.99 delivered, a real bargain, it arrived within a couple of days even on the free 5 day delivery .. :thumb:
