Title: Power figures
Post by: Tacitus on May 30, 2008, 09:30:15
This is really of general interest, but can someone tell me what the limits are to the power that ADSL pushes down the pipe.

At the moment my power figures are:

output power upstream: 11 db
output power downstream: 15 db
Attn 56dB

The attn figure has increased over the last 6 months as it was 54dB until then.   Suggests the line might be going bad (or worse).

Are the power figures reasonable - I know attn is high.  Is it possible to increase them and if so what is the limit?  What effect might it have on SNR, or would it be self-defeating?  IE Increasing the power would also increase the noise.

Thanks for any advice

I think this is one for the really knowledgeable types, Tac. Afaik, normally, power levels are set in the negotiation between router and DSLAM. The problem is that, if everyone starts to increase them, then cross-talk increase, so does noise, and we're all back to where we started. I can tell you that IDNet are seeing increasing cases of attenuation increases due to poor line maintenance - certainly it's happened to my connection.

That could be what's happening to mine as well.  After completely rewiring my internal phone circuit with all the usual stuff, I managed to reduce the reported attn from 57/58dB to a consistent 54dB.  Over the last six months it has gradually increased to a regular 56dB.  I know that TT put up the power to next door's line which may have had a knock on effect on mine.

The only cure is to completely renew the cables through the village, which is probably not going to happen in my lifetime.

Interesting to know what's happening.
