Title: AVG 8.0 email problem
Post by: Monk on May 24, 2008, 09:43:32
Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong please feel free to point me in the right direction.
I'm having problems with AVG 8.0. I have downloaded the new version on my PC which uses Windows XP and on which I have and use Outlook Express. All has been fine and is working well. I have tried to do the same with my daughter's laptop, which has Windows Vista installed. All the components apart from the email are installed correctly. The email scanner says that it is in 'error state' and she may not be protected. The icon is yellow in colour. I have tried looking at AVG forum and Help but am somehow confused. I'd like to point out that my daughter has not activated her Outlook Express and has no account set up there. She uses MSN servers for her mail-hope this makes sense. Am I right in thinking that because she does not use her Outlook Express, the AVG software has nothing to scan and therefore may show an error? Having said that, the earlier version was fine and she was still using MSN servers to access her mail. Am I missing something here or maybe I have not installed the new version correctly. Any explanation or help would be much appreciated.

Hi Monk

Unfortunately, I'm completely the wrong person to help you as I don't use Vista or AVG. :(

However, until somebody else comes along, my one thought is that I didn't think Vista shipped with OE, I thought that had been replaced with Windows Mail.

You are correct as usual Rik - Vista ships with Windows Mail instead.

Not sure whats going on there monk - I run vista, have AVG 8 installed, and haven't activated any accounts in Windows Mail (tend to just stick to hotmail and gmail), but mine is showing everything, including the e-mail scanner, as green. Looks like a possible problem in the installation.

Just a thought - was there any other AV, anti spyware, etc software running when you installed AVG 8 ? If so, I would suggest disconnecting from the internet, uninstall AVG, stop them running, install AVG again, and re-enable them one by one to check if any of them react with the AVG.

It might be worth uninstalling AVG, then reinstalling it and choosing the custom (or advanced - can't remember the exact terminology) install. I know that this will give you some email scanner options. Perhaps, for some reasons, the default install isn't detecting any mail applications, so isn't installing this feature.

There seem to be issues with avg 8 and vista with regard mail scanning. Suggested solutions are reinstall completely, reinstall and leave out the email scanning component or use something else like avast which is also free.I do recall that MS advise against using a mail scanner with windows mail, you will still be protected against a virus by your anti virus software should you open an infected file. :)

:but: I used the default install without any problems, and I'm not using Windows Mail

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions. I will try to reinstall it again. My main concern was whether we had any protection.
You are right about mail in Windows Vista, my lack of knowledge is to blame for not making it clear.
Thanks again.
