Title: Solicitor billed £4,900 for watching “The Apprentice” when abroad
Post by: Noreen on May 21, 2008, 13:16:13
QuoteWhilst out enjoying a long weekend on the French Riviera, a solicitor has racked up a bill of £4,900 as she used her iPlayer abroad.

The BBC's catch-up service, the iPlayer was used to watch The Apprentice along with some other TV programmes.  The 46 year-old solicitor, named as Janet, and specialising in property law, had no idea that her £25 per month tariff, that appears to allow unlimited downloads in the Uk, did not apply abroad..............

Read that in the national press, must admit my first thoughts were why you want to go on holiday abroad and watch those programs anyway. the words "get a life sprang to mind" :)

I don't believe a solicitor actually thought she was OK to do that - I always thought solicitors were supposed to be bright, but anyone with half a brain would know that "unlimited" in the context of mobile broadband in no way means unlimited even in this country - and things are always different abroad.

I'm tipping she did it without realising how much it would cost, the firm has highlighted it and quite rightly pulled her up about it, and she is now trying to find a way out of it. None too clever if you ask me.

I'm with you, Mad. I'm sure she knew that if she made a phone call or sent a text message, normal rates would not apply. Must be embarrassing for her to explain though.  >:D

Receiving an unjustifiably large bill might make her realise how the rest of us feel when we have to deal with solicitors.

that;s peanuts to her, she'll just carry on charging £20 for a 3minute phone call, £40 for a 6 line letter , for her customers.

solicitors are almost as bad as estate agents, at ripping us off ,and i gather 150 of them are going out of business per week now, yipee :rant2:

I also agree that she must have known additional costs would apply.  I hope the mobile phone company stick to their guns!

I suspect that this is the whole basis of this Rik. I bet the company has (quite rightly imo) refused to pay it, and told her that she must sort it.
