Title: My PC on the 'net...
Post by: Bill on Apr 11, 2006, 22:28:18
If I visit this site:

http://www.lagado.com/proxy-test

It tells me this:

This request appears NOT to have come via a proxy.

The request appears to have originated from host cust120-dsl53.idnet.net which has ip address <my IP address>

amongst other things. As my IP is fixed, is the "cust120-dsl53.idnet.net " fixed as well, and could it be used to communicate with my PC?

Not necessarily with malice aforethought, I was thinking more of a simple web server, so I could post piccies without all the bother of hiring web space....

Yes, cust120-dsl53.idnet.net is unique to you Bill and you can indeed use your connection to set up a server :)

Cheers mate, all I have to do now is find a web server that will run under Win98SE!

Hi Bill

We're happy to customise the DNS for your IP address if you wish.

Thanks Simon, I'll bear that in mind when I've decided whether or not to risk running a web server here!

Just noticed your post time- don't you ever go to bed?!?!?!?

Quite likely, knowing Simon...

I was reminded of a saying back in my CompuServe (and dial-up!) days:

You know you're an online junkie when you get up at 3am for a pee, and on your way back to bed you check your email

Came a bit close for comfort, that one. :D

OK, so I tried the web server that Jeff suggested, piece of cake to set up, tested out fine on the local machine... opened up port 80 on the router and tried accessing it over the net from daughter's PC using my IP address as the URL.... error 404  >:(

If it ain't dead simple I cba'd to carry on with it, so who's a good mob to rent web server space from?

I don't want anything fancy, no scripting or anything, just some space that I can ftp some files to (mostly graphics and an index.html file) for viewing via http. 100Mb would be plenty, even 20Mb would probably be enough.

And one other requirement- cheap  ;D

Any suggestions?

Bill, I`m on the verge of buying some web space, everything I`m looking at is usually under £25 for a full year, which is dead reasonable, but I`ll probably have more space than I need and I could give you a share of the space, I don`t mind, would far rather see it put to good use :)

You wanted cheap ... it`ll cost you nowt. Now, and I say it in true Nicholas Parsons fashion, that`s Sale Of The Century! ;)

That's very kind Jeff, but I'm reluctant to risk screwing up a mate's web space... I've been pointed at Image Shack, I'll give that a look.

If I don't like it, I'll be back  ;D
