Title: Scanner program
Post by: Noreen on May 07, 2008, 19:09:27
This program has been highly recommended on "my" American forum. It also gets old scanners working with later operating systems.  http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html

I've used VueScan, Noreen. It's good. If it runs under Vista and recognises your scanner it's well worth a look. (I'd completely forgotten about it, tbh. )

i can't seem to see what this does, other than getting scanners which normally won't work under certain os systems working.

does it actually improve the scan , (picture quality )

It allows you to do much more 'in the scanner' adjustment of the picture than most scanning software, Bob. Only that supplied with some high end scanners matches it.

Apparently it does run under Vista and yes it does list my old scanner which Canon says won't work with Vista. I'm certainly thinking about it as it would be cheaper than buying a new scanner. Just a bit nervous about paying money to an American company that I don't know.

Try the free trial, Noreen and make sure you are happy. The company has been around for a long time, I'd be comfortable with them myself (but use a credit card for the extra protection).

I probably will try it later, Rik.

Bob, if you download the manual you'll see more of its capabilities. Probably more than I'll ever need as I just need a program that lets my scanner work. ;D

It's worth using things like the black and white points, Noreen, as this will determine the dynamic range which can then be captured.

i downloaded the trial version ,and the pdf manual, as you said noreen .

i haven't yet tried using its capability's , but it leaves the options in my scanner software standing by along way, i love it ??

question is should i remove my original scanner driver/program , to save confusion or just leave it ???

Leave it, Bob.

Bob, how long does the trial version last, I didn't see it mentioned anywhere? Also I wondered why when you have the option to "run" or "save" the download, the instructions on the site say to "run" it.

I can think of no good reason to run it from the site, Noreen, and several not to.

I usually choose to save when downloading a program but I just wondered if there was a technical reason that a company would advise you to run it.

I can't think of one - most installations advise you to close all other apps first. If it needs web access, it will soon tell you.

Well, I saved it and then installed it and IT WORKS! If this program can make my old scanner work why can't Canon? So this should cost me about £20 which is quite a saving on the price of a new scanner. ;D

Canon could, if they didn't have a vested interest in selling you a new scanner. :(

Seems to me that this program is one of those worth keeping on the "reference shelf", Rik.

I went ahead and bought the Standard program, there didn't seem to be any reason for waiting. So now I have a working scanner. ;D

Great news. Let us know how you get on with the software. :)

However I did a very stupid thing when buying it, accidentally used my debit card instead of my credit card. :eek4: I've been on to Barclays this morning, they were very reassuring, said that people were doing it all the time. Anyway they've put a note in my records and assured me that they will sort any future "problems" out. Meanwhile I'll be checking my bank account extra carefully. I was concentrating so hard on getting the card number right that I completely overlooked the fact that I was using the wrong card. :(

You should be OK, Noreen, they've been around a while.
