Title: Any idea's???
Post by: stevie0573 on Oct 29, 2006, 13:33:25
Hi guys im wondering if you may be able to clear something up for me as i havent got much of a clue about these things.

My router is saying that its sync'd at 8128kbs downstream and 448kbs upstream but when ive run at speed test it always comes up at around 5.5mb (give or take a few).

Im just wondering if this is kinda normal or should my router be in sync at a lower rating.

steve

Btw its not a moan by any means in just confused .............again

Looks not too bad.
You'll never get more than 7 and a bit even with nobody else on the network.  The 8 is a theoretical figure they use for advertising.

Run this BT Speedtest (http://test.speedtester.bt.com:50301/) and it will tell you what speed your line is actually rated at, rather than synching at.  That figure is the limiting factor, and is set by the Max system depending on what it thinks your line can consistently do.
I'd expect it to say 6 or 6.5, which again is a theoretical figure.

I get between 4000 & 5500 Kbps  , my modem syncs at the max speed.

Cheers guys,
I find some of these things confusing. i have tried to fun the bt speedtester for ages now but it still comes up with errors :( im guessing there are to many varribles that happen to make each line different.

Still im totally happy with what im getting (just run the test from giganews and got 5857kbs)

I haven't checked for a while and just got 1500  :o

I checked the exchange and got this-

Virtual paths: Red

BT is reporting that some of the virtual paths at this exchange are not operating within BT Wholesale's planning guidance, although they are still operating within the product specification.

At busy times, your ADSL connection may operate at a reduced speed, although not all customers on your exchange may be affected. You should only contact support if there is no current ETA date set.

The ETA fix time is: 27 Oct 06

Record last updated: 16 Oct 06

Exactly the same dates on my exchange too.  There seem to be a lot of red VPs all over the place, and the status checker does not get updated very often.

Jupiter as the date has passed i assume yours is also still reporting as red?

mrapoc i think we have our wires crossed , i didn't do a sped test i checked my exchange using this - http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/

Heres another , its not showing details for my exchanges problems but give it a try - http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php

Yes, still red, but as the last update of the status was 16 October I wont be holding my breath

Last time I checked, the samknows exchange checker hadn't been updated for quite a while.

The usertools one over at PN has been updated last week, http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/

PN have also started graphing the exchange details: http://users.plus.net/exchanges/huge_graph.php

Shows the number of exchanges at red VP status, versus those at green VP status.

I wonder if the surge in red rated exchanges on the graph is a result of the price war between high volume ISPs piling high and selling cheap - it seems to have happened from September onwards.

Some have predicted that as Max rolls on contention will become acute and overall ACTUAL speeds decline.

I think there's a real risk of this, as BT have not invested sufficiently in the network, they are always playing catch-up.  :(
