anyone know a free program to record radio streams?

The freeware Audacity proved to be user-friendly enough that even I could install and use it :):-

Two points: it records everything coming from the sound card so it's best not to be using the computer for anything else while recording. Also a tiny bit of trial and error experimentation is needed to set volume levels optimally.

Depends on what radio broadcast you want to record, but for shoutcast style streams (which are the only ones I record), I use and recommend StreamRipper. It records the stream only, not everything from the sound card.

I reckon VideoLAN Player would do it.

It does Video so Audio should be a snip.
