Title: Reverse DNS
Post by: esh on Apr 12, 2008, 11:27:19
Hello again,
Sorry I haven't been around too much of recent. Lots of work and illnesses and all that fun stuff...!

My question is regarding the allocation of multiple IP addresses. Can one request that the rDNS (for one or more) IP address(es) be changed to a subdomain that one owns that points to the machine? OpenBSD is pedantic about security and has a habit of pausing for ages on a shell login because it is trying to get the forward DNS to match the reverse one for the machine!

Just gone past the one month barrier, by the way. Pleased to announce zero minutes downtime and ~834KB/s throughput down and ~80KB/s throughput up constant. Meanwhile, Tiscali remain advertising on TV. Superfast broadband and telephone for only £6.49 a month. Oh, *really*?

Hi Esh

Hope you're feeling OK again now.

Have a word with support on Monday, see what they can come up with. (Unless someone happens along who knows the answer...)

I made the marvellous decision to switch from Tiscali to IDNet last October/November. I have just received a cheque from Tiscali repaying the amount they owed me. Didn't take long, did it?    :thumb: :solved:

Hey

As far as I'm aware you can change the reverse dns to near as dam it anything you want generally so can't see you having any issues with idnet doing it.

Yeah - you can change the rDNS to pretty much anything you want - do IDNet host this domain or someone else? If it's someone else, you will need to contact whoever that is, as they will have control over the zone files for your domain on their nameservers  8)

Hi folks, thanks for the responses. One of the domains is registered with IDNet in fact, but the other isn't. I currently have BIND handling all internal requests, so I could just expand that to deal with external too. I'll look into getting this all set over the next week or two.
