Title: Hooray -- signed up with IDnet at long last
Post by: LinLin on Apr 11, 2008, 14:16:48
Very happy to be part of the IDnet family now. The confirmation e-mail came through yesterday.
:D

Question is, how do I know if my connection is now active through IDnet or through my previous ISP? Trying to figure out if I might experience a bit of downtime sometime over the next few days.

I'm using the Netgear modem that was recommended on this forum. It has been a dream to use. Do I need to re-configure anything, or will it automatically detect changes associated with changing ISP?

Much less pressing question -- how do I set up an @idnet.com e-mail address?

With thanks,

LinLin

 :welcome: LinLin

The only things you should need to change on your router is the username and password to the credentials that IDNet will have supplied you with. While you are on there, just check the rest of the settings to be on the safe side.

As for the e-mail address - sorry I don't know - never set one up, but I'm sure someone will be along to help you with that.

Hi LinLin

You should receive an email confirming that you have been migrated, is that what you have, or the one confirming the order?

If the latter, it will give a date for the migration and say that it will happen by 6pm on that day. In practice, though, most migrations happen in the small hours, and you will probably wake up to find that you can log in to either ISP.

Once you have the confirmation email from IDNet, you need to enter your username (the whole thing before and after the @) into the router plus the password you'll have been given. Once that's done, you should connect to IDNet and start enjoying the results. :)

To set up an email account (which you can do, and use, before you migrate) go to your accounts page on the IDNet site, login and then click on the email tab. Choose a name, if it's free you'll be good to go in seconds (you also select your own password). You can have as many addresses as you want, each box can hold up to 100MB, the maximum attachment size is 10MB.

Check the email for the connection date.  Enter your Idnet user name and password into the router on or just after that date.
To set-up idnet email addresses log into https://www.idnet.net/secure/  enter your username and password as supplied by idnet and you can set up everything from there.

More helpful people will be along shortly.  See above,  I told you so. :thumb:

Welcome to our little family of friends.  You will enjoy it here.

Hmm... typed in http://192.168.0.1 for my Netgear router, and then it asks me for a username and password. So far, so good.

I've tried both myusername@idnet.gw5 (my actual user name, of course, not myusername literally!) and the password sent in the confirmation of migration e-mail, and also tried just myusername and the password. Neither is working... any ideas? All in lower case, exactly as it was in the email. Baffled. ???

LinLin

Don't take this the wrong way, I want to make sure I've understood you correctly. You're not talking about the login dialogue for the router are you, which will be the popup when you put that URL into your browser?

Thanks, Rik.

All set up now. Support from the forum, great support from the 0800 support line. Email set up without a hitch once I knew where to look. This IS the Rolls Royce of the ISPs.

An immensely happy

Linlin

You just need a [ /quote] (no space) at the end of the piece you're quoting, then add your reply after the closing bracket (preferably with a couple of carriage returns...

Great news, LinLin. If you can get a BT test at some time, that will tell us what your profile is set to. (http://test.speedtester.bt.com:50301/)
Title: Re: Hooray -- signed up with IDnet at long last
Post by: LinLin on Apr 11, 2008, 16:53:56
How is this possible? Again, I was told to expect up to 4 kbps. I just tried a different server site (limerick) on speedtest.net, and it came out even higher than the last one -- 6.682 kbps.

The BT test you linked to showed:
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6525 kbps

not sure what it all means, but there it is.

Title: Re: Hooray -- signed up with IDnet at long last
Post by: Rik on Apr 11, 2008, 17:00:56
That's the one that matters, LinLin.

You have the maximum possible sync speed and a profile to match. Allowing for overheads, your connection is going about as fast as is possible (I'm jealous!). Speedtest.net can produce some pretty interesting figures, often faster than is physically possible. I'm not a great fan of the site.

If you check in the Netgear ('show stats' button), what is your downstream attenuation and noise margin?

ADSL Link             Downstream     Upstream
Connection Speed    8128 kbps    448 kbps
Line Attenuation         26 db         6.5 db
Noise Margin                   9 db           24 db

Again, WOW!

You even have some noise 'headroom' to play with. That connection should be flat out all the time. (I'll be round to borrow it shortly ;))

Hi LinLin

You only need to change the password. If you're using wireless, I'd also recommend changing the default SSID from Netgear.
