Title: BBC Speed Tester
Post by: quandam on Oct 25, 2006, 09:49:28
Yes, there is a BBC broadband speed tester.

Click on this link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/check/weather/broadband?redirect=fs_index.shtml&bbram=1&nbram=1&bbram=1&prefs=1&weather=1

Hit the 'Test My Connection Speed' at bottom of page and 'Back Button' thereafter to re test.

Can't guarantee the tests accuracy though

Interesting one.
Judging by the time it takes, it can only send a few K bytes.
Suppose it's aimed at telling you if you can get decent streaming speeds.

I got 3 Mb and 3.6Mb in quick succession - was 4.6 on the BT speedtester earlier, but that sends a lot more data.

Speed testing is a real black art, remember you're only as accurate as the number of times you take the test multiplied by the data sent / over time to send so the more times you do the test with more data the more accurate your test will be. However then you have exchange contention to deal with, routing issues on the way to the server, and finally everyone else hammering away at the server doing their speed tests too !
