Correct me if I'm wrong, but it didn't state which version they tested, so going on the other tests, I would assume it was the Pro (paid) version, which is supposedly very good.  It's the free one most people use, though, and I have noticed a worrying number of machines getting infected lately, using AVG Free.  :)

Hi there, been using AVG freebie plus Zone Alarm and Adaware for six years, and the past three years on the paid for full monty version of AVG after ditching Norton. The free version of AVG found a virus which came thru an email and quarantined it strait away, the paid for version found a trojan about 12 months ago and that's about all the problems I've had in ten years.   :)  Maybe I've been lucky.  :) Just watch, now I've posted this.   :fingers:

I can well believe that, Brian.  I've only had a very small number of trojans, and never a real destructive virus.  A lot of it depends on how 'safe' your surfing habits are.  If you steer clear of the dark side of the web, you are less likely to encounter nasties, but there have been exceptions, one which springs to mind, being the trojan ad found on Digital Spy recently.

I do use other security stuff alongside it. ;)

See above, In.  I'm sure, for most users, AVG free is OK, but having see quite a few forum posts recently, where people using AVG free have been infected, I wouldn't personally feel comfortable recommending it.

Yes Simon  I've been reading some worrying reports about AVG recently and have been thinking of having a change but as you say I try to  keep my surfing habits safe without getting paranoid and go where I want to go, will see how things go 'till me subscription runs out.  :fingers:

Fair comment Simon, but when you see " paid for " versions from the likes of Trend Micro failing, it does make you wonder if it is worth paying out for them.

I would take a look at Kaspersky. It's very good value and an excellent piece of software. I recently switched from AVG Free and it was worth every penny.

AVG sucks under Vista. End of :(

It used to be good, but the new version is bloatware :( Not sure if it works okay under XP, but I didn't want to cripple my laptop trying to find out.

I gave up with AVG free - happily been using it for a couple of years, then it updated - after that it was very resource hungry for some reason, so got rid of it.

It's OK, I think Vista sucks, it is the bloatware of all bloatware, I mean, just how much memory does it need to run properly?

AVG doesn't slow my computer on XP.

it monitors the main vista/xp functions like svhost etc on mine at default it monitors 41 programs and personally I don't mind the pop ups they go away after a day or so and are easy to configure, the new version 8 which will be out soon has a new firewall, but the Kaspersky 7 firewall gets good reviews with matousec for leak tests which says a lot.

That's what we thought, In. They have to be very regular (10x10x90mm from memory), thoroughly washed, then absolutely dry etc - with a massive cooking time to follow. After which you strip down the machine and clean it. We decided to settle for less chips, but 'real' ones. :)

The point is, it doesn't *just* do chips.  I don't think I could be bothered with the manual chipping and drying thing, but it cooks frozen chips just as well, although admittedly, it does take a little time.  I only did a small portion, and it took about 22 minutes, which is about the same time as it would have done in the oven, without waiting for the oven to heat up first, but for two people, you would be looking at about 35 minutes.

Chicken nuggets = 12-15 mins
6 chicken breasts (750g) = 10-15 mins
Lamb / pork chops = about 20 mins
8 Sausages = 12 mins
Meatballs (12) = 18-20 mins
Scampi = 10 mins
Mushrooms (650g) = 15 mins

You are supposed to be able to do fruit in it too - Bananas, apples, cherries, strawberries, pears and pineapple are listed.

Cleaning is no more of an issue that any other cooking utilities, and the main drum that needs cleaning after each use, as you would a pan or an oven tray, can go in the dishwasher.

I haven't really played with it all that much at the moment, so it's difficult to give a full review, but on first impressions, it seems quite good.  Two things I would criticise - one is that during operation, it's quite noisy, and secondly, the timer alarm is quite quiet, and doesn't actually switch the thing off at the end of the time period.
