Is it just me, or do the options to stay logged in on the login screen not work?

Which ones? I use the main box in the centre with the "Always Stay Logged in" checkbox, it works for me. Haven't tried the small boxes on the right.

I have no problems staying logged in, try clearing your cookies

Seems you are right. Firefox 1.5.0.1 seems to have changed the way it treats cookies. Thanks for the pointer.
