Title: Usenet speeds terrible
Post by: wrtpeeps on Apr 03, 2008, 14:14:31
Last night at 3am I was trying to download something from usenet. It was downloading at 40kbps (incredibly slow). When it does speed up (the max it reached was 190, a few weeks ago i was getting close to 400) it soon drops back down to nearly crawling pace.

This was at 3am, so it isn't contention, and I don't know if BT do work at that time of night. Also, the  ports are forwarded, and for the sake of elimination, I also put DMZ on the computer. The problem is still there.

Windows Vista is the OS, with windows firewall off.

Any ideas, PLEASE?

Did you check speeds generally at the time? The first thought I would have would be server load. As it's outside the IDNet network, a comparison would be the only way to narrow the search.

I thought it was maybe the server load, but this was not the first time this has happened, and my friends using the same provider but different isp (virgin) is getting the speeds I used to get.

I've even tried different newsgroups, but they are all terrible.  :(

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately my incident is not limited to last night  :(

In that case, I'd suggest you do a BT speed test, then contact support to take a look at things for you. The BT test is something they will ask for, so it will save time if you have it ready.
