Title: Switching to Firefox
Post by: Malc on Mar 24, 2008, 08:33:55
Is firefox free? if I try it and if I don't like it will IE7 automatically be re installed?
I'd like to know more about it.

I've never used anything other than IE

Although  I felt the same way about explorer, until I tried Opus Directory, I'd never go back now, you can export lists (ie mp3's) to Excel, resize the fonts, and may other things.

FF is free, it doesn't replace IE, you just decide which one to make your default browser. I have all three major browsers on the machine (IE7, FF, Opera) but prefer FF for most things.

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/landing/better/?utm_content=0705features&utm_source=google&utm_medium=ppc&utm_campaign=0507lndgpgtest&gclid=CMGgwYCspZICFQ3alAodohZFNA

You can import your favourites from IE, so that bit is easy, plus there's lots of addons to make it exactly the way you want it.

I've installed it, the thing I'm struggling with is, in bookmarks (favourites) the folders are alphabetical, not the order I want them, drag and drop don't work. How do I rearrange the folders (I can move individual pages)?

TBH, I've forgotten how to do it, Malc. In the Organise Bookmarks window, I have view set to sort by name, but I just drag and drop as I need to. This tutorial (http://mozilla.gunnars.net/firefox_bookmarks_tutorial.html) implies that's all you need to do.

I can DnD bookmarks, but I organise into folders, football, music, BToorent, shopping, etc, it's the folders hat won't DnD, I suppose I'll just have to get used to the new order.

Done it, you have to do it in tools- organise bookmarks, in Ie you could move then around in the drop down menu, I suppose this is a better way, as it's not accidentally mixed up.

Maybe this bit of this thread could go in help?

I can drag folders around in the bookmarks sidebar, Malc. Does this not work for you?

I don't have a sidebar, I have to click bookmarks at the top, maybe I've got a different version  :P

FF is great Malc - I only tried it recently (after years of pestering from a certain mouse) and I like it a lot  :)

Click on view up at the top Malc - you can get the sidebar - I prefer to use the bookmarks toolbar myself

You need to subscribe. Go to your accounts page and hit the subscribe button, FF will pop up a dialogue...

I had to get a new computer chair recently because the arm on the old one broke, and I fell out - ending up sprawled on the floor  ;D

Woohoo - a Directory Opus user - and now Firefox - welcome from the darkside to light and heaven on both counts. I would never go back to anything with "Explorer" in the name (whether it's preceded by "Windows" or "Internet").

Get the IETab plugin for FF and you can dump IE permanently - even getting windows updates through FF.

IET won't install, says will only work with version 3, I have version 2.

Tried auto update, and I have the latest version  ???

That's strange - I installed IET  - and I'm on version 2. They must have changed it from a few days ago - it does state for version 3 now  :(

The old one is still knocking about. Try https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addons/versions/1419 for all previous versions.

What does it do?

If you have a site that insists on IE - click the firefox icon in the bottom right corner to change the rendering engine to IE. The icon will change to the IE icon and the page will be reloaded.

If there are IE only sites you visit regularly you can configure the plugin to use the IE engine automatically for those sites (Windows Update should be pre-configured)

You might also want to take a look here (http://www.idnetters.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=7060.0), for a quick tweak, Malc.  ;)

I'd rather keep the Alt+S thread separate, Rik, or it could get buried.  ;)

If you're on a page with an RSS feed you will see an orange and white square that looks like a dot with radio waves coming out of it at the right hand end of where you type the page address. Click on it to subscribe :)

Cheers,
Paul.

That's a useful addon for sites that require IE. Thanks!

It took me a while to get used to FF but it is far superior to IE in every way.
