Don't worry about the colours, David. Just look at which terminals they are currently connected to (they'll be numbered) and connect to the same numbers on the new faceplate. :)

No numbers just A and B screw terminals, think the line is older than me :fingers:

The one connected to B will go to terminal 2 on the new faceplate, and the one connected to A to terminal 5.

See if it works first. ;)

It should work; I'm assuming that the 'A' and 'B' references are to the A- and B-wire (the wires connected to terminals 5 and 2 respectively).

If you find that the extensions don't work after you've fitted the faceplate, it'll simply be the other way round.

Ooh, a mobile icon!  How did you manage that with a mere Nokia, Lance?   ;)

I worked out its because you use the wap interface, which causes it to show the icon!

It doesn't, David, if the phone worked, so should the ADSL. I should, perhaps, mention that if you're dealing with A/B wires, you are working on the BT side of the master, which is technically illegal. Can you post a photo of the rear of the adaptor, ie the terminals?

Use the reply button, not the QR box, David. Towards the bottom of the screen there's an additional options button. Hit that and you get the ability to upload an image with the post.

It has to be <512k, David. Can you reduce it locally, eg in a photo-editing app.

That's definitely the exchange pair. Is that the back of your adaptor, or the original master socket. Which adaptor did you buy?
Title: Re: Adsl adaptor cant see how it fits to my phone line
Post by: David on Mar 17, 2008, 10:08:19
This is the only phone socket (not the adapter ) in my home,as you know the adapter is numbered hence my confusion Rik this is the underside of the socket which my telephone plugs into,I dont have extensions, hope this is clear,(I sometimes say things wrong)
The adapter I bought was the same as in your photo with the printed letters ADSL V1.0

Ok, I'm a bit puzzled. What is this adaptor that you bought, where did you get it from?

Well, the first thing I have to say is that you shouldn't be connecting that in place of your master socket, David. That appears to be a full replacement face plate for a standard socket. What components are on the rear?

OK, that's a standard plug-in master then. So what were you trying to connect the wires to, the terminals? That won't work - the terminals are for internal extensions. It picks up the phone line via that BT plug. If you did connect the green/black wires to those terminals, your phones would have worked, but the ADSL side would not.

Well,I will go to the bottom of my stairs,it fits perfectly, and easily!why did I get the wiring instructions and wire connecter tool, and all that when in reality just needed to plug it in.(feel such a fool) but its in and working now.and I have a very smug wife looking over her glasses while doing my crossword in the Mail..............got to see the funny side of it  :karma: :solved: :notfair:

Just a quick pint BT sometimes swap over the a and b when they do rewires,
now you could use a meter and work out which is which,

BUT I DO THE FOLLOWING HONEST!!

spit on your finger and place both bare wires onto spit the one that fizzes is the a line.

all to do with salt in saliva.

now ill wait for the smart alec comments back.  thats the way us old telecomms engineers do it.

2 things laptop hard drive and builders!!! (or lack of them lazy gits) and when they are there they moan about everything!!! i even got asked for different toilet paper in the outside blue builders loo.PICS OF EXTN (http://www.packetradio.co.uk/gallery/main.php/v/extn/)

should have a roof on by end next week though.

then the major phone re-wire starts and thats when im gonna document how to do it properly...

How do you plan to do it?

IMO the best way if possible is to use a filter at the master socket and keep the phone and DSL wiring entirely seperate from there. You can get filter plates with terminals for both filtered and unfiltered wiring on the back which are helpfull when doing this.

you might also consider structured cabling but IMO that is probablly overkill for a domestic installation.

 ;D

oH where do i start...

Okay started by digging up existing bt cable into house and re-wiring ready to be put in extn nearest to bt cabinet and furthest away from house.

structured cabling is "nearly" house wide going back to patch panel which will be located in extension.

bt master point will be in extn from that it will go via cat 6 cable to router (located alongsidewhich will wireless brigge over to another router and into a cisco switch) the phone side will go straight into a phone to dect to dect to phone adapter. Purpose of this is to isolate all house wiring from the telephone wiring as much as possible.

all equipment bt side to be put in steel box (earthed seperately via copper rod 4 metres deep in ground) run from an isolation transformer which in turn will be run from an apc 3000 ups. again to give maximum isolation.

You  may wonder why i need so much isolation? well i have major major peoblems with trains (mainly virgin) interfgering with my connection and causing "noise" on my line. at the start of adsl i was getting 150-200+ dissconnections a day.

with the BT special faults investigation team and a lot of help from other bodies the dissconnections are right down (one a week on average) but the wiring in the house is pretty much all disconnected, this in short term was okay-long term noway.

hence the MAJOR MAJOR rewire and investment.

and yes i am telecomms trained and am presently working for a company specializing in voip hosted services for business and gsm local cell over voip.  and yes i have my own pico cell in the house which is how i currently survive for voice calls (wife with no phone=no s*x).

and yes i have a solwise & clarity & adslnation filtered faceplate all 3 and about 7-8 routers. all used to try and get the most stable connection.

the cisco router was the second best pipped at the post by the infamous 2700.

SOHO 97.  i did "borrow" an 837 and that worked about the same as the 97
