I agree sebby. The fact Sam can't access the router at the time suggests to me that it is either the router or his machine. It's certainly not his connection.

I'll third that. Try changing cables Sam, assuming you're not using wireless. If you are, try changing channel, eg move to ch1.

Its a 10m ethernet cable going downstairs to the router

Perhaps its time to move the router upstairs, put those connectors (iv forgotten the name of) on either end and use the ethernet as the adsl cable, and a smaller ethernet from machine to the router ??? if that would help

You've got it the right way round, Sam, short ADSL, long ethernet. That's much less susceptible to noise pickup, and a single segment of etherenet can be 100m long, so the cable should not be an issue (unless it's faulty, of course). Have you looked at the router during the downtime, is the ethernet light going out?

It's got to be worth a look, Sam. The light will go out if the link drops (though you should also get a system tray popup about a disconnected cable). If that's not happening, then I'd be inclined to try a different router.

No change in connection status at tray - in fact msn messenger carries on fine. Mail takes a while to come in and browsers dont even load

Well I couldnt even connect to router. It was as if there was no connection between Pc and router.

Maybe i could just power it down for 30 mins or so :fingers:

Let's try and narrow the search, Sam. Messenger continued to work, mail is slow but does work, browsers load but you can't reach the web? Would that be a fair summary.

In that case, I'd suggest swapping the router out if re-booting it doesn't cure the problem. :(

Does this happen after you have used utorrent, by chance? I found that after I installed the last update, each time I used it my entire internet would freeze, or slow to treacle like speed. I found that doing a reinstall sorted it all.
