Title: Will this switch mount in this cabinet
Post by: Jackosx on Mar 05, 2008, 14:51:27
Hello, not sure if anyone knows but, we have this new cabinet at work (see picture below) at the moment it has a patch panel in there, I am looking at buying a switch that will be able to mount in the cabinet. I am not sure if the cabinet is size U1 or what....

Will this switch be able to mount in there?

from your measurements that cabinet appears to be a standard 19 inch rack cabinet (I think the 19 inch in 19 inch rack reffers to the width of the rack including the mounting rails but excluding any cabinet enclosing the rack).

Height of equipment in 19 inch rack cabinets is measured in rack units usually written as U (e.g. 1U means one rack unit high). Your patch panel looks to be 1U high so that gives you an idea of how much more kit you can fit in.

Check the depth as well, I think your cabinet is deep enough to mount most switches but not deep enough to mount servers in.

And to be really boring, everything you never wanted to know about 19" racks:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/19-inch_rack

I'm sitting next to a 40U rack full of Midi/audio equipment, so it's a completely universal standard and as plugwash says, depth is the only issue with regard to measurements.

Ventilation may also be an issue depending on the equipment.

Incidentally, if anyone is after a couple of (approx) 100U wheeled racks for free, PM me and I'll give the guy a call to see if he still has them.

100U is HUGE (about 4.5M high by my reckoning), I was under the impression that most racks in datacenters and the like were only 42U.

D'oh!  You're right of course and I can never be relied upon when it comes to numbers.  My rack is 30U (just counted) and is about 5' so based on that alone, the freebies must be 40U racks.

Damn you dyscalculia!   ::)
