OK, I was bored this weekend so thought I'd try Firefox what with everyone raving on about it.
Anyways, it's annoying the hell out of me cos even though I've ticked the "new page should open in new tab" button, everytime I go to a bookmark, it changes the tab I'm on rather than opening a new one. It's version 2 by the way.
Any ideas? Is version 3 any different? Or is it back to Opera I go?
If you click on Help you'll see the following
"New pages should be opened in:
This optionpreference controls whether links from other applications or from
web pages which request to open them in new windows are opened in a new
window or a new tab in the most recent window."
In other words, it's nothing to do with bookmarks. If you want to open a bookmark in a new tab, right click on it and select "Open in new tab". If you have the last of the Tab options selected you'll move straight to the new tab.
Hi Col - thanks for that. I realise it's nothing to do with bookmarks per se, just used to a new tab being opened automatically - which is handy when you are trying to compare things rather than having to mess about telling it that you want it in a new tab each time.
I do have the option that you suggest selected, so it's nothing to do with that - just looks like Firefox doesn't do what I'm used to and prefer, so back to Opera for me!!! 8)
I use either / or Mad, both have good and bad features. ;)
you could try one of the add ons for firefox. I have Tab Mix Plus which gives extra features for the use of tabs. Theres a section in there for 'Open Tabs From...' and you can choose Bookmarks.
just tried changing the options for mine to open in a new window but it still opens in new tab.....slightly confusing I know :)
HTH
just thought you could try the center button on your mouse if you have one, that may open links in a new tab
Cheers for that baz - I'll have a look at the add on you suggested 8)
Edit: Yep - that works fine - looks like there are a hell of a lot add ons. Have to look at some more....
Have a :karmic: for your suggestion 8)

tbh In, I've been happy with Opera, but as I had some time I thought I'd give FF a try to see what everyone was on about. I'd rather just have one that I use all the time than swap about between 2 or 3.
The thing about FF, Mad, is that you can turn it into the program you want it to be with the various addons. I have all three browsers on my machines, but FF is the one I feel most in tune with.

Fair enough Mad, I only use Opera for secure transactions, I just feel more comfortable with it on the basis that is the least used, and possibly more secure, just a theory of course. ;)
Thanks Mad :)
it took me a while to get used to FF after all that IE use. once you get into it and adjust it to how you want its great, there is loads of add ons yes, thats what I like about it too.
I used Maxthon (http://www.maxthon.com/) for a while which is based on IE I believe but it too uses tabs and is ok.
Yeah - I used maxthon for a while when I was still on IE6 and XP Sp1 - I liked it too. Once i updated to XP2 (which was only last year) and I got IE7 I used that for a while, then decamped to Opera.
I suppose a large part of it is what you are used to - and I think that is some of the problem with the resistance of some people against Vista.
If you do stay with Firefox be sure to use the Febe add-on
Seconded!
I'll have a look at that - thanks

But presumably an absolute pain if you want to whip through 20 or 30 sites in turn and find you've got 20 or 30 tabs open!

I use IE when my bank insists, FF for general use and Opera for Quidco (so I can clear all cookies before each transaction).

True col - I suppose each system has its downfalls - just I would rather have to close some tabs on the odd time I do have quite a few open (tbh I usually close as I'm going along unless I know I'm gonna come back in the next few minutes) than have to tell it to open a new one each time - each to his/her own eh? :)

Indeed. And I'll give Tab Mix Plus a go and see how I like your method - I shouldn't knock it until I've tried it!
If you do stick with FF, FireFTP is a handy add-on.
Thanks for the info col :)
I'll second that on FireFTP, great addon. I also use Flagox, which indicates where the IP address is.
Thanks for the info on FireFTP, I'm going to take a look at that now. :)
It is very good, Sebby, just does what you need with no fuss.
I just tried that trick someone mentioned the other day where you can edit install.rdf so that extensions work with FF 3.0 beta. ;)
And did it? :)

went to add ons and searched for flagox but it didn't come up with anything? ???
There you go:

ah rite - cheers Rik - I'll have a look :)
I also recommend McAfee Site Advisor if you don't already use it.

I'm amazed it got that close. :)
Good to know. :)

Cheers Rik - got that. I'm tipping I can copy the FEBE cgf file to a flash drive to put straight on my lappy and work computer?
Should be fine.
Thanks for all your help Rik :karmic:
Edit: weird - with the siteadvisor enabled, if I click on the IDNetters Forum link at the top of the boards nothing happens, yet if I click the firefox home button (this is my home site) everything is fine. Before installing this, and if I disable it everything was/is fine - any ideas?
Edit again - clicking the home link right at the top of the IDNetters page doesn't work either - curiouser and curiouser....

Agreed Mad, it does deserve a Karma .. :thumb: :karmic:
Thanks guys. :)
Further to the above, with site advisor enabled none of the "you are here" links work except the immediate section I am in eg technical discussion.
Sorry, Mad, what 'you are here' links?
Sorry Rik - popped out for a bit to play with me organ ;).
The ones just underneath the big blue rectangle at the top of the screen. When you go to look at a post, it says eg:
you are here: IDNetters Forums » Technical Discussion » Computer Discussion » Post reply ( Re: New tabs in Firefox )
the first three on there are links, yet only the computer discussion (ie the last) one will work after installing siteadvisor - if I disable it, everythings as it always was. Cancel that - it doesn't even work if I disable it now :(
It works fine for me, Mad. :(
You do mean the bit I've highlighted?
Yes - that's the one Rik.
I've uninstalled siteadvisor just to make sure that it was that causing the problem, and sure enough, no probs anymore
How odd. I've got SA on all three machines and I've never had an issue with it. Did you check your settings in it before removal? One other thing you could try is adding the site to the 'do not warn' list.
Yeah, I messed around with the settings, but to no avail. Never thought to add it to the "do not warn" list as the site itself was coming up, and some links were working. Could just have been a dodgy install I suppose - always possible. Might try it again at a later date
I don't have it in the don't warn box, Mad, and I've used the SA since before McAfee took it over with no problems at all. It's particularly handy when you Google, as it will warn of risky sites in the results page.
Yeah - it does look like a really good thing to have - maybe it just doesn't like hoobs - especially green ones ;D
It goes green for good sites, that can't be the case. :)
Yeah that's true - it was definitely showing green for idnetters, and when I looked up the site details on there it said it was fine, so just can't understand it. Like I say - might try it again later in case it was just a dodgy install or something.
It's not an 'active' program, in the sense of AV or firewall, it just warns you - so it really shouldn't be blocking a link at all.
you know that.... and I know that..... but obviously IT didn't know that ;D
Typical IT, I'd say. :)
That just about sums it up :)
I use it as well, no problems, it must be the green thing... ;)
I thought so In - its a hoobist piece of software - gonna write and complain ;D
Edit: Have tried it again (cos it's the middle of the night, and I've nothing better to do :(), and it seems to have worked fine this time :thumb:
Phew. :)
