got one of these netgear rangemax wireless USB 2.0 adapter WPN111 in my sons system upstairs and it says its up to 108 mbps, alwyas shows as excellent signal but only recieves at 54 mbps.
is that normal or should it get what it states
It can only work at 108 with a matching router, Baz.
right. I have a netgear DG834PN. I think they match, bought them as advertised compatible
Was that qualified, Baz? By compatiable, they just have to work together, even if that it at 11mb!
However, maybe there is a button to press somewhere to get it working at the 108mb. I don't know though!

I would assume somewhere in the driver for the adapter, assuming you installed the driver and it didn't just find one automatically. I could of course, be completely wrong and there is another reason for it not connecting the 108mb. As I don't have one I can only guess :-\

there is a tick box but it was default ticked at 108 mbps. untick it and select the other box for 11 mbps :eek4: doesnt make any difference but re selects the original 108 box. :dunno:

yeah sorry should have said. changed those settings in the adapter software on my sons system.
a tick box is in the Wireless Network section of the router pages. was set at g & b - Both 802.11g and 802.11b wireless stations can be used.
changed it from a drop down menu to Auto 108Mbps - All 802.11g, 802.11b and Netgear 108Mbps wireless stations can be used. Didnt seem to make an immediate difference, maybe I didnt leave it long enough.
I've never dabbled with pre-N stuff, Baz, so I'm not sure how it would take effect. Possibly you need to re-boot?

I had a DG834PN router, the drivers that come with the adapter just made my wife's laptop crash sadly so we never got 108Mbs make sure you have the latest drivers for the adaptors to be honest the 108Mbs was pretty flaky on those machines sadly as was the DG834GT and I think if it can't make a decent connection at 108Mbs if will default to 54 but I could be wrong, I would check the driver installation on your sons setup and leave the rangemax router on auto 108. you can get the latest drivers for the adaptor here. http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WPN111.asp (http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WPN111.asp)
thanks guys. never thought of the drivers, will get them today and try the reboot method.
do you think if any changes are made in the router settings I will need to wait a while for the adapter to pick them up or should it be instant
Should be pretty much instant, if I change mine from G to b my wifi devices lose connection instantly so any change at the router should be pretty much instant for the 108Mbs switch as well
tried new drivers and got the connection showing 108 mbps but it just would not pick up an IP address. left it trying for half hour or so but nothing so hes back with the old driver and 54 mbps until I can look into it more :(
