Title: Telephone bell wire
Post by: Steve on Feb 26, 2008, 20:59:58
I have read several articles concerning the removal of bell wire from hard wired extension cables at the master socket. Can anyone tell me if a extension cable plugged into the master socket faceplate creates a bell wire connection (as they have four pins) and therefore could be a source of noise? Should all extension from the master socket be hard wired with just two wires? ???

The bell wire is only created if terminal 3 of the master socket is connected to terminal 3 on an extension socket, so yes 2 wires only.

Hi Steve

As Kinmel says, just two wires, which should be on terminals 2 & 5. Make sure that they are pairs, eg blue/white and white blue.

yes if the extension cable is plugged into the master socket then the bell wire in it will be connected via a capacitor (which looks like a short circuit to ADSL frequencies to one side of the line). This is not a good thing.

IMO the proper way to do ADSL installation is to use a filtered faceplate on the NTE5 and keep phone and broadband wiring totally seperate from there.

Indeed, a filtered faceplate is the way to go - and it does away with the need to remove the ring wire - but it isn't always an ideal setup for users.
