Title: The Vargaries of IE7
Post by: LesD on Feb 25, 2008, 20:38:35
Before I mention this I know the answer is likely to be. "don't start from here" use an alternative browser but I don't want to.  ;D

Does anybody know why when I open a new tab in IE7 that I always see the, "Welcome to Tabbed Browsing" screen despite having checked the tick box by "Don't show this page again" any number of times before clicking the "Close" button?  ???

It is only a minor irritation but this does not happen on my second machine so I must have something set differently but I know not what! :dunce:

Hmmm.  I can't recreate what you're describing.  In Tools -> Internet Options -> Tabs -> Settings, have you got a tick in the box that says "Open home page for new tabs...."?

Try putting a tick in the box I mentioned.  That's the only difference between your settings and mine.

Done but it made no difference!  :(
I closed IE, re-started it and tried opening a new tab again with no luck. I wonder about a registry corruption or maybe something my malware software gets up to. I run PREVX 2 and have asked their support about this but they have gone quiet on this one.

I have found someone else with the same problem here:

but the is no solution.  :(

Thats extent of my expertise.  :dunce:

However, I've just found this link. (http://blogs.technet.com/askperf/archive/2007/03/30/ie7-tabbed-browsing.aspx)

It contains the following instructions for administrators to enable/disable the welcome screen in the registry:

QuoteHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TabbedBrowsing\ (if you want to make the change system-wide.  If not, set the value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER)
Value Name: ShowTabsWelcome
Value Type: DWORD
Set the value to 0 so that the users are not presented with this page. Set the value to 1 so that users are presented with this page. If the browser is configured to open the homepage, then that page will be displayed when a new tab is opened by the user.

Magic Captain K,

You deserve a promotion!  :)

I had no TabbedBrowsing entry where your find said it should be so I created one and the DWORD ShowTabsWelcome, set it to 0 and Eureka new tabs open without the annoying welcome page.

I wonder if some over eager registry cleaner took this entry out somewhere along the way because I have no recollection of dabbling in this part of the registry before. Now should I have set a Restore point first. That's me always wise after the event!

Thanks for the help. :thnks:

Pleased to be of assistance.  :)  Some folks round here may prefer a Court-Martail to a promotion, but "Leuitenant K" doesn't have the same ring.  ;D  Now Admiral K - I like the sound of that... 8)
