I sold my K850i a couple of days back as it started to frustrate me; poor software and deteriorating build quality were my biggest gripes. Anyhow, I'm thinking about replacing it with a P1i. I was going to just get a K810i (older than the K850i, but highly regarded), but then I thought it would be great to have a bigger screen and wi-fi, especially as I like to visit forums away from home.
I know the W960i is out now, which is effectively the same phone, and it's certainly a bit better looking, but I tend to stay away from the Walkman phones as I have an iPod.
So, are there any P1i users here, and if so, what's it like? I've done lots and lots of reading on it, but you know when you just need some reassurance about something? That's how I feel now. ;)
Sorry, Seb, Nokia man myself. :(
I'm a Sony Ericsson man through and through, even if their build quality is really suffering lately.
Hopefully there are a couple of P1 owners here. :)
I own a K800i and looking to upgrade in May. I was going for the K850i for free off O2. What problems are you having with that phone ?
I have seen K850i in the shops and i am not mad on the keypad (for texting). The P1i looks to large for my needs. For me £90 off O2.
Many Thanks
I got my K850 when it first came out, so I'd hope the build quality issues have been resolved now. To give you an idea of the hardware problems I had, they included extremely creaky casing, loose screen, and dust getting under the camera lens. The software was also pretty bad; slow and buggy, although a new version has been released since I sold it, and the feedback is good.
The keys are fine once you get used to them. If you like the K850, go for it. As I say, I suspect the build issues have been resolved now, some 3 months on, and the software is already much better, and will continue to be improved by SE. I just refuse to buy another; it doesn't seem right!
Cheers for the quick reply :thumb:
I think I will still go for a K850i in May if Sony E don't release a new version by then.
I have dropped and abused my K800i for about 14 months now No real problems only dirt on the camera lens.
I'm surprised to hear you've got shot of the K850, Seb, given that the last time we spoke about it, you were eagerly awaiting the next software upgrade. ;) I have to say, I've got used to mine, and now I like it very much. I love the Laser Precision theme, and the layout and navigation is much clearer than the N82 I also recently tried. Haven't used the camera all that much, but the photos I have taken have been more than acceptable, although it still seems to have the occasional mis-synced flash, resulting in no picture. The key pad can be frustrating when texting or emailing, but I've got used to it fairly quickly. The build quality of mine seems fine too, but the main asset is the way it displays the forum(s) I use regularly, which enables me to keep in touch when not at home. :)
I don't even know what a P1i is...
What about the new SE X1? Looks cool! 8) (No, it's not supposed to say SEX1!) ;)

It was quite a spontaneous thing, Simon. I can honestly say that had mine not been such an early build of poor quality, I wouldn't have got rid of it. Over the last few weeks, the casing was getting loose and it was upsetting me.
It's a great phone, but I think they perhaps they released it a little early. Luckily you got it recently so I bet yours is great. :)

I bit the bullet and ordered a P1i from Play.com (£259.99 + 4% back from Quidco). It's a little pricy, but I sold my K850i for £150, and when I come to sell my P1i I'm sure I'll make back that "loss". Can't wait; I love gadgets. :)

It cost £14.00 delivered including Special Next Day Delivery from Vodafone, had a Voda Sim with it with £1 credit on it, generous to a fault. ;D
I had it unlocked within 20 minutes via the net. ;)
I don't like the look of that little pen thing. Easily lost, I would have thought. I think I would also have trouble getting used to the QWERTY keypad after so long using a 'normal' mobile keypad. That said, it does look a neat bit of kit, and I love gadgets too, so I'm looking forward to hearing how you get on with it, Seb. :)

From what I've gathered over on Esato, the keypad takes about a week of getting used to, and after that it's great. The stylus may be a bit fiddly, but you don't have to use it too much. :thumb:
The best thing is that it'll make visiting IDNetters on my mobile very easy. :)

Years back I had a P910i and loved it, the pen made texting great as its handwriting recognition is superior to windoze mobile which the SE X1 is built on, I had a play with a windows mobile device a while back the O2 Stellar and in the end the lack of flash support was frustrating and IE on it was terrible sending an sms was a pain, I had to use opera for browsing in the end as well, so I sent it back and got a Nokia N95 8GB which has wifi and flash lite 3 for viewing flash content in the browser on web sites such as you tube, but its still a phone as well so sending sms and making calls are easy but it has the features I require for mobile computing, very happy with it, I have always liked Nokia's but since the P990 disaster I have avoided SE, be interesting to hear what you think of the P1i Sebby. I'm keeping an eye on the N96 later this year but since it has a smaller battery than mine and has DVB-H mobile tv and recording facilities I will wait for some hands on reviews, even with battery management I think it may still have weak battery life like the N95-1 did, even with the version 20 firmware release. They want to make devices slim to be attractive but there is no point if they have no usability due to short battery life. :(
Unfortunately, Play.com are out of stock. Hopefully they'll be in very soon as I'd love to have it before the weekend!
Is that the best price you could find, Sebby?
For a SIM-free one, yes (don't forget I got 4% back from Quidco, equating to just over £10, so it came to just under £250). If you can find me a better price, I don't mind. ;)
Amazon - £239.95
here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Ericsson-Free-Mobile-Phone/dp/B000UAIZKC/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1203966790&sr=8-1)
I saw that already, Rik; it's not from Amazon, but rather "iTALKonline". Firstly, buying such an expensive phone, I want to buy from somewhere quite reputable, and I also want to be sure the stock isn't old. Also, once you add postage onto that seller on Amazon, it's only about £5 cheaper than Play.com.
Let the challenge continue... ;)
Mmm. I could only find a case at eBuyer. :'(
I guess I could just buy a case and pretend I've got a P1. It would certainly be cheaper... :D

I'll probably get the N96 later this year and pass the N95 8 to my wife, that way I feel justified to spend the money as I always buy sim free handsets , so many times the firmware on contract phones is butchered.

Sorry about that Seb, it is so bloody annoying, you wait in all day...nothing, have you checked the web site to see if that has been altered.?
I hate waiting for goods on a Saturday, knowing that if they don't arrive, there's nothing you can do till Monday. :(
The website is still showing out for delivery as the status. I can't see it turning up today somehow... ::)
If I'm expecting a delivery and it gets to about half four, I tend to phone up the delivery company and ask when it is going to be delivered.
Done this a few times with citylink. Once they forgot to load the item on the van so had to make a special delivery that night, and another time the driver who would have normally done my round wasn't working. One both occassions, as the items were dispatched by next day delivery, I pushed for them to delivery on time and they did. The customer service at the depot to get the issues resolved was good on both occassions.
I'm now not sure which phone to get myself. The X1 looks great, and will have a good screen. The N96 also looks good and should be out a bit earlier than the XI (I've seen May 7th mentioned for the N96), but I feel it is let down by not having the Xenon flash or graphics chip aas in the N95 8gb. The N82 in black also looks good, but will be almost 6 months old by the time I get it in May. Depending on what the X1 is like, and when it is actually realised, that is the way I'm going at the moment.
I looked at the o2 stella (?) today and that looked quite a nice phone. I quite liked the qwerty keypad on the slide.

That is a drag - could you get them to deliver to an alternative address as they have failed to meet the delivery you paid for? Might be worth a nag at Play.com.

It is a shame about the N96 and the graphics side but I have read it should not effect as much as you would think, cant for the life of me remember why though. I had the O2 stellar but for everyday usability its not ideal, sending texts can be a pain and for someone walking about it would be impossible also there was no flash player available for it and its version of IE is awful, you really have to use opera, also it has no flash on the camera at all. Zenon flashes are better but I bet with all the features of the N96 it would eat the battery, the N95 8GB I have does me quite nicely for now but I'll check a N96 out to see what its like.

Hmm, well whatever the case, it didn't arrive today, and the site is still showing it as out for delivery. It's a bit annoying as I'd have liked to take it away with me, but I'll be back on Friday and I'll have it then (hopefully!).
" out for delivery " in Parcelfarce speak, probably means that it is sitting in a Parcelfarce van, locked in their yard somewhere Sebby.
Sorry that it didn't arrive. >:(
Honestly, I won't let it get to me, In. I can wait one more week (or so I keep telling myself). :)
It is possible that it was on the van, but due to traffic etc, the driver ran out of time before all parcels were delivered. I've known that happen a couple of times with Parcelfoce to people I know.

Just under 1 week on and I'm loving this phone. Unfortunately the speaker is faulty (in fact it was out of the box, and this is a 2008 week 7 build, so it's a little worrying). Luckily Play.com were fantastic and are collecting it and will issue a refund. So I don't have any "downtime" I just ordered a new one (incidentally, the price has now been reduced to £249.99, and you can get a further £10.00 by going through Quidco).
Anyhow, the keyboard is taking some getting used to, but I am getting quicker, and I can imagine it to be rather good. The wireless connectivity is great, too.
So far, so good. :thumb:
Glad you like it Seb. SE rules!
SE does rule, even if their phones do have far too many issues for the first few months of release. Thankfully the P1i has been around a while now, and the build quality is superb.
Life's just not been the same since everything had 'Made in China' stamped on it. :(
I really wish they would hurry up with the X1, as that is the only SE phone which interests me! I'm more of a Nokia person myself!

Indeed. My view is that China is very capable of making high quality products, but it's the manufacturers that force quality down to save money. It's only after a few months of the product being released that the manufacturer realises that warranty work is costing them a lot and things improve!

style over functionality, and devices like that don't tend to appeal to me. But then I do love the iPhone... :P

Not to mention high-quality fakes. :( The real issue with Chinese manufacture is what you might call the China Syndrome, it's the relentless cutting of costs by the brands in an attempt to make bigger profits. R&D and, particularly, QC are too expensive, so let the customers do the testing. It drives me nuts...
Me too, Rik, and yet we have no choice because there's very little that doesn't come from there!
Tell me about it. Almost anything 'techie' will have some Chinese element, often a very large one.

Ooh, I like that 902, but is it me, or does it have a smallish screen?
There both 240*320 according to the info towards the bottom of the link above but I can see what you mean.

One of the things I like about the specs of the X1 is the VGA screen :)
