Title: MS warning that Vista SP1 will 'break' some programs
Post by: Rik on Feb 22, 2008, 12:07:07
The BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7205059.stm) is reporting that SP1 for Vista will stop some programs working. It lists:

BitDefender AV
Fujitsu Shock Sensor
Jiangmin KV Antivirus 10
Jiangmin KV Antivirus 2008
Trend Micro Internet Security
Zone Alarm Security Suite
Iron Speed Designer
Xheo Licensing
Free Allegiance
NYT Reader
Rising Personal Firewall
Novell ZCM Agent

Oh joy!

The thing that some media sources seem to love not mentioning is that all these companies would have been aware that this will occur for a long time. It's actually more the fault of the company making the 3rd party software if they haven't upgraded their software by the time SP1 is released.

This is what release candidates are for.

Don't worry Lance.  This is top software company Microsoft we're talking about here.  They will have properly and exhaustively researched all the applications that will be affected by SP1 and will have made strenuous efforts to ensure all users are aware.  I think you can sleep soundly knowing the list is of affected apps is complete.

Be fun to see what XP sp3 does :-\ I think IE7 comes with it now but I'm not sure, XP sp2 broke loads of applications so its par for the course and I think most of those listed have updates now, for me it will be reformat and install SP3 for safety.

Shame In, the new version of IE7 has the menu bar on by default, a antiphishing feature like firefox a rss feed reader and  better security than IE6 which has an overall impact on many parts of XP not just the browser thats the only reason I installed it as it tightens up security in windows in general, you would be amazed at what is tied in to IE, and don't forget IE8 is in the works now :sigh: roll on FF 3

The real differnce between N and S Wales is;

South Wales, they don't talk to the English;

North Wales they do talk to the English, but only in a foreign language.. :out:

Anyways, bring this thread back on topic (I know - boring aren't I?), I've read all sorts about this SP1 thing, and the big XP fans crowing about it all. The thought that struck me was - can nobody remember the absolute shambles that was XP SP2, or are some people just using their selective memories? Yep - MS should have learnt form that, and to be honest I think they have to a certain extent because they are actually warning you this time. Looking at the list and checking it out, most of those listed already have updates available that will be compatible with SP1.

From what I have read, the problem is occurring because of the way that these hook into the kernel of the OS. MS tries to make the OS more secure and what do they get apart from loads of biased press that is just itching to have a go at them? I'm not pretending that I love MS or Bill Gates, but to be honest I think that all this coverage is pretty much ( to borrow a phrase from my good friend Will ), much ado about nothing.

*ducks to avoid the missiles  I can hear ready to be thrown at me  ;D*

No, Mad, I haven't forgotten SP2. I waited a good long time before installing it. :)

Was worth it though - didn't have a problem

Me neither. By the time I put it on, just before they stopped doing updates for SP1, all the issues had been sorted. I'm not cautious, I'm very cautious. :)

To be honest, I think I'm gonna wait before putting SP1 on the laptop to see what comes up. Have been looking at replacing my desktop too, but am now gonna put it off until they come preinstalled with SP1 to save me the bother.

Sounds like a plan. I've used a similar strategy in the past myself.

I live in Wales, and I agree with you. It's all very boring around here. Obviously there are some very nice areas of countryside, but the same can be said of anywhere. Personally I'd like to live in a nice part of Scotland, or southern Ireland (with lots of read heads skipping through the heather :D)

The problem is idiot software develops who don't keep programs up to date. SP1 beta has been around for a while - more than enough to check compatability and patch their code if necessary.

I'm actually running it now (cheers to friend for his MSDN login :D) and have had no problems at all.

I always feel most sorry for the people who use PCs and aren't technical.

These, the same people who have auto update enabled.  They may buy some magazines for free programs, usually a previous version of the program.

So these people also dont know how to check to see whats on the incompatible list.  They wont know how to check the web for the patch to fix the problems.

So sadly the people who are most affected by bad releases of software and patch updates are the same people who dont know how to fix it. :-\

Very true, Bob. They are also generally the ones who have no idea about security, AV etc. :(

I was sort of one of those people once. I grew up with ZX81s, spectrums, Amigas, Acorn Electrons, BBC model A and Bs, some Amstrad behemoths, Apple touch screens (in the early eighties!) and finally PC (which were very basic pre windows, DOS based things). I had a break from using them every day for nearly 8 years and finally decided to splash out on a P3 600. Because of my gap in knowledge at the time I was trying all sorts of free programs. It didn't take long to realise that while these area good taster, it's abundantly clear that updates are needed or they don't work properly, or at all!
