Title: Mandriva Linux help please
Post by: Broadback on Feb 17, 2008, 10:25:22
Thought that I would start a new topic  rather than adding to my old one.  If that is not acceptable please add it to "Topic: Simple HD query from simple person"
I think it best if I add one questions at a time, so as not to confuse myself!
I have managed to get my Zip parallel port drive recognised , when I go into Configure-Hardware there it is, however I am unable to read or write. Any ideas please?

I would imagine it would need a driver, but then I know nothing about Linux. :( A new thread is a good idea, btw. :)

Sadly the  links there to the Zip drives have been removed.  I looked elsewhere, messed around for hours and still cannot get it to work.  I have progressed some, it will now reject a disk when I press the button, so something is working.
Another problem if I may.  I have put music on one DVD and a video with sound on another. I can play the film but none of the programs will recognise the music DVD, any ideas please?

you could try asking on the Mandriva (http://mandrivausers.org/) forums, i've found them very helpful in the past.
What format does the music take i.e. mp3, wmv, wav etc and how did you burn it to the dvd?

 I'm sure you have all heard the parable of Walter the wheel tapper.  I found that my music CD has gone tilt, recorded some more music and it is fine.
Now I will concentrate on trying to get the floppy drive to work, should be easy!  :sigh:

I can remember when software came with a large bunch of floppies to install from, and the process took hours, quite literally often with things like Corel Draw.

John,
open a terminal and type
mount /media/floppy   and then press enter. Then type
cd /media/floppy    and then press enter.  Then type
dir
You should see a list of files on the disk.

Now open krusader and go to the root directory whick is /
double click on media and then double click on floppy.
You may need to alter permissions in,
Configure your computer, local discs, floppy drive, options.

Definitely milestone ;D
Now you know it mounts ok just insert your floppy (ooo missus!!), open krusader, go to /media, right click on the floppy folder, look down the menu and choose "mount". You'll hear the drive fire up and become usable.
Whole thing should only take a few seconds and there is no need to be root.
