Really piss**d off.
i shout at customers that backup is the most important thing.
i have a 500Gb network drive i use to backup all important things.
my server uses raid 5 with hot spare and seperate data and o/s.
just spent over 72 hours doing a web page on my laptop (all about basic adsl problems) and guess what.
the FU***g drive's gone totally u/s. no data recovery tools can get anything off it. it just clunks...it clunks even more now as i tried the tap it fix...its now getting the sledgehammer trick.......
I wouldnt mind so much but its normally me telling customer's and the wife BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP

My sympathies, Dean. I am a backup freak - but sometimes it's still possible to get caught (my classic being I have some data, but not the program to open it!).

i wouldnt mind but even the pics i took are gone as i used the wifes camera (my battery was flat) and she always wipes my cr** off when ive finished.
Ordered a new drive now, trouble is boss wants old one returned for destruction (we carry a lot of passwords etc on our laptops) hope he doesnt mind that its now in a about 100 bits in a polybag.
I have a big sledgehammer that the builders were using-it was soooooooo handy. (got a few strange looks from them but they left me alone) and i now feel better.
Best way I know to safely dispose of a drive, Dean. :)

It always seems to be too late to backup. :(
I thought about my mistake and it bought back what i have done to some customer systems..
when i had scheduled downtime i extended it a bit and copied a ghost image of the whole system to my laptop and then copied it to dvd.
I have only ever restored from 1 of these BUT the downtime to the customer was reduced to less than an hour after i "hit" site. Oh how impressed they were a quick restore and then a restore of the data files from the back up tape.
If i had reinstalled and restored data they would have had 5-6 hours downtime.
I do it for customers why oh why don't i do it more often for myself? i have a network backup drive second copy and a 10Gb USB stick.

Don't sugar coat it, Dean, say what you mean! ;D Sorry to hear your news though. Fortunately, significant data loss has never happened to me, but I know how annoying insignificant data loss can be, so you have my sympathies also, and a :karmic: to help cheer you up!
I've lost stuff in the past, and it's extremely frustrating. :(
You could have tried putting the drive in the freezer (in an air tight bag). Might have worked and given enough time to restore the webpage, if nothing else!

Crikey, that's some collection, Malc! Although, I think 'music charts' is a bit of an oxymoron these days. :-[
My most important files are my pictures. I have them backed up with TI as part of my HD image on a external drive. They are also stored on the drive on another partition and also on my laptop. I also have all but the most recent on a DVD I keep at work.
Yeah, it's something I started doing around 1970, I was mad on music as a kid.
I had them all on paper, but since the days of PC's I've been slowly transfering, it's much easier to search for stuff.
And comes in very handy for the song game :)

Yeah, me too, Malc. The 70s was my era, and I would argue to the death that it was the best era for music. Certainly the most inventive, although I acknowledge the seeds were sewn in the 60s. Queen, Sweet, Slade, Mud, T-Rex, and all that lot were what I was mad on as a kid / teenager, then later on, Led Zep, Genesis, Floyd, etc.
