I found this thread very interesting and it may be of help to anyone with restore problems. I've never done a full restore (had no need to) but I always validate my external full drive backups via the TI Boot CD as suggested in the thread and not through Windows.

Unlike the original poster, I had previously read advice to always validate using the TI Boot CD rather than Windows although I hadn't really understood that it was because one uses Linux and the other doesn't.
The worrying thing to me, Noreen, is that they provide the validation tool in Windows. If it can't be trusted, it shouldn't be there. That said, I've not had a problem yet...

Only once, thankfully. At other times, I've used the backups to recover damaged system files etc.
I had to do a restore after my system drive fell over! Worked no problem at all, I had not tested it with the boot cd, though I will in future. I always have son, father and grandfather back ups. When I worked in computers I was called to a hospital where the system was broke. Turned out to be the fixed disk. I offered to restore it for them as the man in charge was a little raw. Not only was the back-up several weeks old but it was the only one and failed anyway.
On questioning the man in charge he said that he was supposed to back up every Wednesday afternoon, but the users complained about the system being down so he rarely did it. If I had been his boss I would have sacked him on the spot. Of course the information was not important, only information on children at risk! :argh:

I had that with a dental surgery I looked after. I scheduled a backup to the standby server each lunchtime, but because they often over-ran, they kept cancelling it. :(
I would have scheduled it for after close, and told them not too switch off!
I had one of them anyway, Lance, to tape and removed from the premises. The problem was the volume of data that was being added - half a day's loss would have been significant, eg treatments, billing, appointments.
Reminds me of a saying of the Scottish Warrant Officer, on my first posting after training in the RAF, "Remember laddie, ye can make it fool proof but you nay can make it c*nt proof!" How true, I've never forgotten those wise words.
