Title: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RC Refresh
Post by: Sebby on Jan 19, 2008, 18:02:11
A new build of SP1 for Vista has been released.

If, like me, you like to install things that could potentially mess up your computer, this is for you.  ;)

Unlike the SP1 RC, it's not simply a case of installing the service pack. Installation is quite a long and drawn-out process. Here is a link to the download (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=529d992a-d69e-4c73-9213-7a7f3852c0ca&displaylang=en), which includes documentation about this lengthy task. It's only a small file as the actual update is downloaded via Windows Update, but you need to make some changes to the registry (using the file provided), and some other bits, to allow your system to receive it.

It took a good couple of hours, so I wouldn't attempt it unless you've got some time to spare. And, as always, make sure you backup first (just like I did  ::) :-[) in case things go horribly wrong. It's unlikely, but always possible.

I've just read that Refresh 2 (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01/25/vista_sp1_rc_refresh_2/) is out, though not available to the public (and may never be). So, there's potentially a chance I could break my computer again at some point

I've got a sledgehammer if you want to make absolutely sure of it, Sebby. :)

I presume that MS are nearly there with the SP. It's about time, but I would be interested (but to lazy to find out) what it is actually going to offer over the standard install with patches?

It certainly sounds like they're nearly there. As soon as it's out, I'm going to slipstream it into the original installation disc and do a clean install of Vista.

As for what it's going to do, apparently there's a lot of security fixes, performance and reliability updates. What that equates to in practice we'll have to see.  :P

What they're going to do is install a copy of XP badged as Vista.  ;D

I hope not though, seeing that Vista is more secure than XP!
