Strange fault this. I seldom use my DVD/CD writer, even for reading. Having cause to use it I now find that when the device goes on line, after loading a disc, whether formatted or not, my system reboots. Thinking it would be a problem with the writer itself I swapped it for the original CD writer and get exactly the same fault.
I tried to do a system restore but after seeming to do so it tells me that it is unable to restore, that is true from any restore point I try. I did however revert to a previous Acronis back up, the fault was the same.
Because I seldom use the dvd/cd device ( the dvd/cd reader has no problems) I do not know when the fault occurred. The only thing I cannot revert is the hard system disc, which was replaced owing to a fatal error.
On rebooting I get the message:
The system has recovered from a serious error
Looking at the error information I get:
BCCode:BCP1:81A2CE00 BCP2:00000D63 BCP3:00000000
Any suggestions please? I really don't want the bother of of creating a new XP, as that would mean a lot of work restoring all my programmes etc, and it may well fail to cure the problem anyway.
Could you try changing the port on the motherboard that the drive is plugged into? Maybe try the one the DVD reader is in if that works fine.
They are both chained onto the same (IDE?) interface, I have tried making the slave the master and vice versa, to no avail. I cannot even decide if it is a hardware or software problem, if I could find that I would be well pleased.
Check in the event log to see if anything is reporting an error, to access it, right click on My Computer and select Manage, then event viewer
I'd try uninstalling all the software for buring cds (roxio, nero etc) and then restart. Try reading and see if there is a still a problem - if not, reinstall the software and see if this helps. I doubt this is going to be a hardware problem. If there is anything more detailed in the event log this may help track down where the problem lies.
There are quite a few possible Hardware reasons why this could happen so as in all computer problems it's best to
try and eliminate one step at a time.
Remove and check the IDE Cable for any kinks or breaks, they're pretty sturdy but they can suffer damage.
Use an 80 wire IDE cable on your Optical Drives, a lot of newer ones require it.
Blue Connector to Motherboard, Black to Master, Grey to Slave.
Try the problem Drive connected by itself as Master - Does the REboot still happen?
IF SO
Try your other Drive by itself as Master. Everything OK suggests that the IDE Channel itself is fine.
NOW
Connect the problem Drive as Slave to your Hard Drive (assuming you are using a IDE Hard Drive rather than SATA)
Does it still Reboot the system? If so suspect the DVD/CD Writer as being faulty.
IF NOT
Try installing the latest version of Chipset Drivers for your particular Motherboard.
This is usually an overheating problem.

Good luck
Thanks you one and all for your suggestions, I will explore them, so see you in 2009
You probably won't have a problem with XP by then. ;)
