Title: Netscape browser abandoned by AOL
Post by: Gary on Dec 29, 2007, 08:27:07
Quote from the reg "An an obituary on the Netscape blog, lead developer Tom Drapeau threw in the towel today. "AOL's focus on transitioning to an ad-supported web business leaves little room for the size of investment needed to get the Netscape browser to a point many of its fans expect it to be", he wrote.

AOL is stopping support on all Netscape browser versions on Feb 1. Die-hard users can, of course, continue to browse the Net, but this may be unwise, considering there won't be any more security patches. Drapeau recommends that people who like the interface, should download a Netscape skin or 'theme' for their Firefox browsers." RIP, Gary. Netscape was my first browser, purchased on a set of floppies. It took me a long time to move to IE.

I know sad day for Netscape fans but I guess times move on and with FF, seamonkey and Flock as well  its just not cost effective any more  :(

It's a shame, because Netscape 9 is actually quite good, even though it's more or less a FF clone, and they've just launched a mail client too.
