Well I now have it up and running! Average speeds a little fast but more important I have not had a lock up since installing, whereas before I was averaging more than 1 a day.
However I am now getting two new problems, which may well be unrelated.
First at times when running eMule I am unable to log onto the internet or emails, closing eMule does not help, I have to reboot.
Secondly ZoneAlarm keeps throwing up a message that it has blocked Win 32 Service access.
Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like ZA may need some tweaking. Unfortunately, I don't use it.

Thanks for the replies, and pointers. Using those I found that if ZoneAlarm blocks off Win32 Services it can stop access to the internet, so I guess those 2 are related. Strange that eMule continues to work, I guess it just stops new accesses. My next job is to bone up on how to allow ZoneAlarm to let Win32 Services through.
I have not used zonealarm for ages but go into the firewall section where all programs are listed, :) and find the service and set it to allow then you should be ok

TBH I would get rid of ZoneAlarm. No point when you have a Hardware Firewall (i.e. The Router). Just use the Router and the Windows SP2 Firewall. Job done. ;)

Yep, no real need for a software firewall with NAT, a hardware firewall, Windows' built-in firewall, and up-to-date antivirus, IMHO.
eMule is working just fine with my 2700 (you'll need to forward the ports manually as, if I'm not mistaken, the 2Wire doesn't support UPnP), so it sounds like a ZoneAlarm issue, as others have said. :)
Indeed, the 2wire does not support upnp :)
Thanks for all the tips folk. I am now convinced that both problems were caused by ZA. I am now using Eset Smart Security (I am already a NOD fan), and have no further problems. I will leave it at that for a few days then probably follow the advice here and get rid of the s/w firewall.

Personally I like a software firewall, to see what's talking to the outside world as if you do get undiscovered malware and it can happen, the hardware firewall will not monitor outbound communication, that's just my personal preference, but ditching zonealarm was a good move. As Far as Eset Smart Security you can uninstall the trial and just install the standalone av if that's all you need :)
