Title: Another convert to the 2wire 2700
Post by: Gary on Dec 10, 2007, 17:28:18
Just got up and running with a quick learning curve  ::) holding at 6336kbs with noise at 6bd will see how it goes, had to resync just now as had cable hell but my netgear would not have synced so high at this time of night  ;D

I suspect that there must be as many members using the 2700's now as those that are not.

Keep us updated Gary, I am still using my Zyxel, which is fine on my line.

Indeed Rik, tho' the Zyxel did show a slight improvement over my old BT 2100.

Both highly stable.

It would be quite interesting, given the quality of your line, to run a series of routers on it, and see how the compare. Shall we all come round with a router in hand? ;)

Well my line after I rebooted at night due to cable issues (had to sort them out) stayed at 5436 with a snr of 8db, that's unheard of my netgear went down to 3db or lower, big difference with this box, resynched this morning to 6144 manually and have a snr of 7db ;D brilliant on a line that has an attenuation of 48db, massive difference  ;D this really is an awesome router ;D

I have one question under the firewall there is strict udp session control, but it says that it may effect some applications, anyone with a 2wire using this setting?

I have had three cups already, disabled remote management in the firewall and left udp session control off, think this is right, it has a few more settings than my old Netgear  :banana2:

;D ;D ;D I have tried 3 different ones on it so far Rik, my Zyxel, a BT 2100 and a Talk Talk  :puke:( read Philips ) one, the Zyxel is the best of the three.

I really don't think that it would make a scrap of difference on my line Rik, I am sure I could squeeze a bit more out of it by cutting the redundant bell wires, but I am very happy with my existing speed, as I think most would be. ;)

Sad that, I think 2wire only sell in the tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands. More than IDNet could buy anyway, but ok for BT and AT&T

I've had a consistently higher sync speed (400K) plus a more stable noise margin (9db +1/-4) since I installed it Simon. The firewall seems more effective than the Netgear one.

The only problem I've found is that I can't get Inactive off my second desktop - see below.  ;D

Does that not give you lots of uncorrected errors, and thus impact on throughput? I know it doesn't for everyone, but I used to get a lot of them (which adversely affected throughput) before I had BT manually set my target SNRM to 9dB. Now, the SNRM stays pretty solid through the day, and only falls to 8dB at night.

What causes you to get a 0dB SNRM anyway? Do you sync in the morning and it's degraded a lot come the evening?

I have to say, with all the praise the 2Wire gets, I've always been keen to try it, but I don't need to spend the money on another router, and I can't imagine it would be any better than my ST 585v6 on my line.

Be careful, this lot here are very good at encouraging people to spend money on new bits and bobs.  I would like to play with a 2Wire but they've put me off with all the techy talk.  It sounds too complicated to me.  This is a Good Thing as I really don't need to spend any more money.

Ann, a 2wire 2700HGV can be bought already converted to run on any network and then it's just a matter of plugging in and entering your details. If a old  like me can do it anybody can and if you are a long way from the exchange then they are worth it. I am about two miles and part of the run is in alloy cable which is the worst type but I still get in excess of 6mb.  ;D

well, I just fired-up my new one, replacing a Netgear..... but I had a rare old time getting it going - I have no cable comnnection....wireless only  - and so far its synching 200kb less than before   :-[
Title: Re: Another convert to the 2wire 2700
Post by: Rik on Dec 11, 2007, 23:48:14
This is probably the worst time of day to sync a router in terms of speed. See what your noise margin is doing in the morning. If it's 1 or 2db above target, then re-sync.

What problems did you have with set up?
Title: Re: Another convert to the 2wire 2700
Post by: Kaiser Bill on Dec 12, 2007, 00:20:05
the machine detected a wireless network, but wouldnt link...then I noticed the HGV wasnt showing a wireless light.... I linked them with cat5 (but no phoneline) for a fiddle, & eventually got it going when I changed from public to private, but I have no idea what the initial problem was.... still, its happy now. The netgear got me downloading at 1200kb with a synch at 1632....I was hoping this would bump me over 1750 into the next category...... I'm 4.7km from the exchange as the crow flies, so a lot longer as the line follows the road....maybe 6-7km
Title: Re: Another convert to the 2wire 2700
Post by: Rik on Dec 12, 2007, 00:24:12
I found that, after forcing a factory reset, the router had a number of incorrect settings, eg MTU at 1492 and PPPoE. Once I changed them, everything fell into place, but I did set up via cable...
Title: Re: Another convert to the 2wire 2700
Post by: Kaiser Bill on Dec 12, 2007, 19:52:10
well, I switched off this morning for a re-synch.... and now I've lost the wireless again...no l.e.d etc. I've put back the 834G, which works without complaint - unless I run cat 5, I'm stuck - the power here goes off about 3 times a week in the early hours, so the only alternative is to unplug the HGV, bring it upstairs, fire it up on cat 5, make sure the wireless is okay, & take it back down to the phone point again....& I'm not doing that 3 times a week!

any hints gratefully received
Title: Re: Another convert to the 2wire 2700
Post by: Rik on Dec 13, 2007, 00:07:57
TBH, if you power is that unstable, you might want to think about a UPS for your system. I've lost power to my 2700 without losing the settings, so my hunch would be that the power outage is noisy and is scrambling the router memory. At the very least, try surge suppression.
Title: Re: Another convert to the 2wire 2700
Post by: Kaiser Bill on Dec 13, 2007, 00:24:38
I know what you mean about the power Rik..but if I want to re-synch deliberately??? & the Netgear bats it off without a second glance - I supposed from the posts that the HGVs wireless was superior, but it seems a bit dicky to me - I guess I have a choice now of using homeplug or cat 5/6 for a direct link - I'd like to give the HGV a good run at my long line, so maybe I should shrug off the wireless network problem
Title: Re: Another convert to the 2wire 2700
Post by: Rik on Dec 13, 2007, 00:36:20
Have you tried a normal, ie non-outage induced, re-boot. I'd be interested to know if it retains its settings in those conditions - it should.

Powerplugs are certainly a good alternative to wireless.

it wasnt a power outage - it was a deliberate re-boot this morning (to achieve a higher sync as discussed yesterday) that knocked it out - (you remember I mentioned that initial firing up of the wireless was ropey ?) - I guess I went back to square 1 then.... I've put the Netgear back, but havent used a hard connection on the HGV since for a look-see

who knows.... but the router is sitting next to me madly flashing it's red broadband LED (cos the phone wire isn't plugged in)....but no LED at all for the wireless. The only wireless signal I'm getting is the Netgear I'm talking to you with....yesterday, it was the same, & suddenly up popped the green LED! - as I say, I've just beeninto it & the settings are all there as they were yesterday when it worked - and the system settings must be okay, cos this signal is getting to you - so nothing has changed as far as I can see.

everyone who gets an HGV off the net knows in advance its chancy - poisoned or SBC (mine is SBC), and we give it a stab just to play about with some chance of improvement, so I cant moan too much - I know it routes, & the modem works, and as you comment on another thread, wireless is not the most stable way to network.... but its done for me up to now. So I have a choice - Netgear + wireless + not knowing if I could drive my speed up, or the wired alternative - whichever, its another bit of kit mouldering in my bits cupboard!

The wirless light does not light up till you use it on my one  :) thats the way they are I think mine is not sbc though. and the wireless works fine also since you have the sbc firmware bumping up the wirless output may help, my N95 mobile would not connect on channel 1,2,3 on my one

well, I've plugged it in - it synched at 1824  - thats stunning for me. With 63db downstream & a 9db margin...... I reckon that gets me 1.5meg (if I can hold it)..... about 500kb more than the netgear, and 1meg more than I had with my previous ISP

whatever, the sync is 200 better than I've ever managed before with any router, and thats powering-up at 0240hrs - I might get better at 8am  !    (I'm not trying that for a few days tho' !)

thanks for hinting at the factory reset Rik - I never considered it even having one til you mentioned it   - I'm obliged!

hope it keeps it up, I'm happy tho' ...... no additional wiring needed after all    (touch wood)   ;D

Same on my SBC firmware, Lance. Like Kaiser, I also had some strange issues with wireless channels until I'd been through the router and changed it from MTU 1492 and PPPoE, to 1500/PPPoA.

I appreciate that the LED only lights when the connection is there....but it wasnt - no broadcast at all detected by my network manager - then the factory reset and bingo!.... I'm using the router to write this, with a speedtest.net at 1480....in fact its just gone up again to 1518/325 ....I know thats peanuts for many of you, but out here in the boondocks, its a miracle!  - my near neighbour struggles at 256k

Thats a good rate ! I live in the dark outlands too

My ONLY neighbour get 512K !! and he wont let me help him get more. I had 512K from BT and thats all it still says I can get.

I am rock solid at 2048 and get 1750 profile..... thanks to IDNET and the 2700

A winning combination.

BLOW ME!!!

its just jumped another 100k !!!!        :o

Red..... if I get 2048, I'd be stunned.... its just gradually creeping up & up ~ I'm like you, I could only get 512 from Virgin on 8mbMax ~ I dont want to crow too early, but your comment is well justified!!   --- I was pleased as punch with the performance of the 834g, but so far this is stratospheric in comparison

as an aside, I fidled with the wireless power... I get a 'fair' connection at 4 - I boosted it all the way to 10 for a try, & the reception only improved by one bar on the chart - so I knocked it down again - (I had thought if I bumped up to 6 it would make a massive difference, but not so)
heres me with things to do, & I'm glued to speedtest

Bill,

Well my attn is 58.5dB and I can make 2048 comfortably at a Noise margin of 12.

Best of my other 5 routers (DMT tweaked and not) was just over 1 meg.....................and then it would fall over 4 times a day..........

The 2700 just sits there, end of. 71 days is my record connection period and I only powered if off cos I was away for a long weekend.

Whaterver the 2700 does it does very well indeed

My attn shows as 60.2db on the stats page, the noise margin is set at 9db by BT.

Currently my 2700 is connecting at 3456 with a 3000 profile, my Netgear 834 was on a 1750 profile. Like you I have not done a thing to the router, it has not reset or re-trained in 45 days so far.

My us Robotics 1906 (2.5years old) shows an
Att 49
snr 11.4
attainable rate 4176
actual rate 3648

This has been like this for the past 40 days since my last reboot, it never varies and seems very stable.  I am 2.7 Km away from the exchange.
Would I ba able to improve on this if I got  a 2wire?

Hi Alf, I'm 3.6k from the exchange, with an attenuation of 56db (thin aluminium) and I gained 400k. If you can try one, it would be well worthwhile based on my experience and others here. As with anything ADSL, no guarantees, but I think you'll see an improvement.
