Title: Hello from a soon-to-be IDNET customer
Post by: tfw7 on Nov 22, 2007, 19:31:43
Just thought I'd introduce myself - I've escaped virgin's clutches and am awaiting activation with IDNET on the 27th.
Very impressed so far - well, let's face it, after virgin the only way is most definitely up!! Last speedtest with virgin was 349kbps; lowest ever was 92kbps last week. Certainly hoping for rather better with IDNET - and I'm sure it will be!

Welcome T, I've only been here since June myself after leaving Orange and have never regretted it. It's amazing how many have been dissatisfied with their previous ISP. I feel sorry for those who've jumped out of the frying pan into the fire and not chosen IDNET.

(almost mentioned food but managed to restrain myself  ;D)

New activations require a physical connection to be made (hence the costs), otherwise it's a few keystrokes at a computer somewhere...

The mad vicar... or Rik ;D

Everyone! I can partly sort it myself, as I can set Firefox not to show pictures from any given site. I've set it not to show anything from bestsmileys.com, which has got rid of some of them, and the forum allows me to block atavars and sigs, but unfortunately when I tell it to block all images from idnetters I lose some of my navigation as well! Perhaps I'll suggest blocking pictures as an option over on IDNet Improvements.

I doubt I'm the only one that doesn't like images, particularly moving ones.

The only thing I would have liked implemented, though as Rik says it would be infeasible, would have been an option in personal profiles. I would imagine the current options not to show atavars and sigs are there because they are used - and not just by me.

For my part I look forward to some of the graphics that are posted and find this the best (and funniest) forum in the UK.  >:D
Title: Re: Hello from a soon-to-be IDNET customer
Post by: Rik on Nov 23, 2007, 17:31:04
I can understand Colin's POV, Den. I grew up on ASCII boards where every byte counted, and still revert to ASCII smileys on occasion.

That said, while the board software has features to filter out avatars and signatures, it doesn't (at least to my knowledge) have the ability to filters graphics within the post. If it did, it would cause problems when people post screen shots etc, so I can't really see it being implemented.

On balance, I enjoy a colourful forum, but I can understand if others don't.  :)

Post by: john on Nov 23, 2007, 19:10:50
Personally I like the images and it does make for a very colourful forum particularly the smileys. Although the English language is quite comprehensive and versatile a picture can say a thousand words and also it is often easier to remove any ambiguity and convey that something is not meant to be taken seriously or not intended to be offensive with a smiley.

A forum I was a member of before Idnetters did not permit any images at all and the members were forever complaining about it.

The only thing I would ask that any very risque images are not displayed directly but a link is posted instead with a suitable warning as I usually log on at lunchtime when at work and they get quite upset if anyone accesses images they consider unsuitable. Not that there's ever been a problem on idnetters.

Moving images bother me sometimes as they tend to flash just on the edge of vision but it's easy to stop them by hitting the 'stop' button in IE.  It works for me.

well I am seriously looking forward to the idnet experience as this was my last recorded speedtest with virgin

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 26 kbps

100& genuine! Probably my last ever speedtest with virgin as my connection then crashed and I haven't been able to get it back up and running since. Resurrected ancient dial up account to get online.
Roll on Tuesday.....
