Hi Rik,
I am getting large leaps in my noise margin figures eg at 15:30 today it went from 14db t0 7db in a split second.During the evening it goes much lower to something like -2/3 db .I have, if you remember recently done a factory re-set on my router, should I let it settle awhile, and check it again?
I have however always had low noise margins at night with the occasional loss of sync.
TIA Alan

Hi Alan
On bad days, I often see a 7db swing in the noise margin. It seems to be an issue with some lines, particularly longer ones. The only thing you can do with the information is try and link it to some electrical activity within your home, eg the heating switching on, or immediately adjacent, eg the street lights coming on. If you can't find a link, and you've already done all the usual things like removing the ring wire, then there's not much you can do yourself. You might like to have a word with support, and see if they can find anything by testing your line.
The router reset shouldn't be an issue, but you might well get better results with something like a 2 Wire 2700, rather than the Netgear.
Ok Rik thanks,
I did do these tests today but I think you will agree there is nothing untoward in them.I havent done the "silence" test yet,i have forgotten the procedure for that :( perhaps you can help.
Thanks again.....Alan
st1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3392 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1907 kbps

Good News, BT have finished enabling this exchange for Max DSL products.
Products will be available from 31/03/06.
Speeds: Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 3Mbps or greater.
Hi Alan
Dial 17070 and select option 2 - quiet line test. Then listen to your own heavy breathing. ;)
Your profile is right for your sync speed, but your throughput is low. What MTU are you using on the computer?

Haven't a clue ::) how do I find that out? :)
Alan
Have a read through this sticky (http://www.idnetters.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=1904.msg31673#msg31673), Alan. It has the full instructions plus the links to the apps and test sites you need.
Hi Rik
thanks for that....I have d/loaded and ran the optimizer and now have profile =2500.t/put=2182.
Does that seem reasonable now? ::)
Rgds....Alan
Hi Alan
The max t/put is 2419 on a 2500 profile, so while you have taken a step in the right direction, there is still some more room for improvement. However, the remaining improvement will most likely not be possible (as a result of your actions) and is probably due to congestion at your exchange, and on the BT speedtester. The best time to run the speedtest is early in the morning, as there is less congestion then.
Thanks Lance,
I will have another go in the morning then.
Rgds......Alan
