Title: MRU MTU MSS Router settings
Post by: Spedge on Aug 14, 2006, 16:31:00
Hi

Just wondering what settings my router should be set to. Looking around it seems for the BT service:
MRU:1500
MTU:1500
MSS:1460

One site says MRU and MTU must be the same and MSS 40 below these.

I experimented with different values in my router recently, because previously with a USB modem (and a different service provider) I'd found lower values to be more effective.  However, in this instance it turned out that the values you quote, which are also my router's default values, did appear to offer the best performance, so I think you're on the right lines.

Simon, leave your router at 1500. Windows sets your MTU and you will have problems if your router MTU is lower than your windows MTU.

Simon, if in doubt, windows default for MTU works just fine ;) 1458 and 1430 seems to be the popular choice.

I was a major advocate in tweaking on DUN and 0.5Mbit but with Max, when I`m downloading at 600kb/sec, I`m not bothered about another 2k! :)
