Title: Bits Per Bin
Post by: Conrad1 on Nov 01, 2007, 22:34:28
Does anyone know what this image actually means?  All I know is that it looks a lot 'cleaner' than with my previous ISP (but maybe that is due to the new cable and things).  Will I still be able to do this cool stuff when my SpeedTouch router arrives? (Rik - I ordered that £13 one from that DSL site - I hope it was worth it!)

p.s. This is my first use of my personal IDNet webspace!  Woohoo! Time for a chocolate cookie!

Is that DMT you are using Conrad? If so, it will work with the Speedtouch.

The bandwidth, shown by our sync speeds, is made up of a bundle of different frequencies, each carrying part of the data, which the modem negotiates with the DSALM each time it connects. The frequencies vary according to noise conditions, and the number of bits allocated to each frequency also varies, according to the noise level for that particular frequency - and you thought it was just a simple hand-shaking process. :)

This is also referred to as bit-loading, i think!

As distinct from butt-kicking. :)
