Title: XP SP3
Post by: Gary on Oct 10, 2007, 11:59:11
Looks like SP3 may include some Vista features as well as over 1000 hotfixes and patches that have been issued since SP2 three years ago! How time flies :o Some reports of the latest beta suggest it has Network Access Protection, an enterprise policy enforcement technology that inspects client PCs before they access a corporate network, then updates the machines if necessary or blocks them if they don't meet specified security criteria. A great feature but not needed for the average home user really. Other additions range from a kernel module containing several encryption algorithms that can be accessed by third-party developers, to a new Windows activation model that doesn't require users to enter a product key. Lets just hope this all works smoothly when its released as backporting from Vista to XP sounds vaguely worrying to me on the compatibility stakes :-\

I think I might wait awhile to apply SP3, just as I did for SP2. ;)

I think any major service pack is worrying, particularly when they then start issuing patches for the just released SP!  Hopefully it will appear on CDs again, so as to avoid huge downloads, rather than being forced on us via WU.

Agreed, I'm not downloading a huge SP again, each time I reinstall, but by next summer with Vista's seemingly better security it may be time for Vista anyway, but that will be dual boot with an iMac, Justina says she wants to go that way as well, but we will wait for the new iMacs to have the bugs ironed out and for leopard to come out and settle first.

The size of Windows Service Packs would probably require a DVD.   >:D ;)

You may well be right - even more reason to issue one!
