Title: What can i do with.....?
Post by: psp83 on Oct 10, 2007, 01:13:22
So, After IDnet let me have a DG834 to test with for 2weeks i've got them to send me a DG834G and it arrived today. Its all setup, IDnet pre-config it, Saves me the job as i'm a lazy so&so lol..

I now have a DG834PN on the side doing nowt, what can i do with it?.. its no good for broadband but the built in switch works fine and the wireless works fine with my laptop, just not with the sticks netgear sale you.

So the question is.. Can i use this just as a wireless, 4port switch?

Example...
Plug RJ45 from back of my computer into the DG834PN (this RJ45 is a 20m lead from the DG834G router downstairs), put another RJ45 into this pc from the DG834PN and use the wireless option for my laptop since it has a longer range than the DG834G? Plus i like sitting outside on nice days when i work from home.

So it goes,
RJ11 > DG834G > RJ45 > DG834PN > RJ45 > This PC
RJ11 > DG834G > RJ45 > DG834PN > Wireless > Laptop

Laptop will be setup to pickup the strongest signal. so if i was downstairs it would use the DG834G wireless but if i was upstairs or outside it will use DG834PN since it has a 100m range and DG834G only has 35m range.

Regards,
Paul

Not sure about this as the DG834PN is an ADSL gateway, in theory you would have two ADSL modems running together, never tried doing that, normally you would have the main gateway then another router with wireless such as the WPN824 which isnt an ADSL modem I would say you may have problems but since I only have ever used another router as a switch with no ADSL modem any thoughts here would be appreciated.

To the link you posted Rik, it says it can be done then it cant be done.. So....

I will go home tonight and mess around with the old router and disable options etc and see if i can get it working.

I knew from the start that i would have to change the ip ranges etc..

Will let you know how it goes!

Good luck. You'll probably find some more threads on the subject on TB, that was the first I came across.

Well i've got it working.. Just got to find out away to control both routers at the same time now.

Pic below:
PSP Extender is the DG834PN router
PSP is the DG834G router

DG834PN was plugged into the 4th lan port on the DG834G and i was connected to the PSP Extender wireless and got websites loading.

Control in what way? How did you get them working?

I want to be able to log into both routers control panel.. but only can do this if i'm on the same gateway at the moment. And its annoying having to release and renew the ip when i want to do changes.

I got it working by disabling NAT, DHCP, Changing the different LAN IP addresses and only using one, letting the DG834G router give out IP's to each machine. And changing the wireless channel etc, I did a few other changes but can't remember without looking again.

So it looks like you can use an old adsl router as a switch or a wireless access point.

I can't think of an easy way round that, tbh. I'm sure there is one, I just can't work out what it is...  :'(
