I'm seeing long (20-30 minute) delays between someone sending me an email and it arriving in my inbox, normally it's pretty much immediate.
Is it just me, or is something going on?
I've seen some delays, Bill, but it's not consistent and I haven't been able to find a pattern. I do know Martin has been tuning the system today, so there may have been some short outages (POP was down for about five minutes at noon, for example).
OK cheers, as long as it's not at my end I'll wait for it to get fixed ;)

I've got a test running at the moment. I've sent a mail from my 1&1 hosted domain to my idnet.com address, copied to my domain, and another from my idnet.com address. So far, domain to domain 15 seconds, nothing else has arrived (5 minutes)

I bet the IDNet team make a book on your reaction times Rik!! :whip:

I think they've probably highlighted my number on their caller display, Mo. :)
I have certainly noticed a delay in PM notifications, most of which arrive all at once long after I have read and replied to the PM.
I have a weird problem where mail is coming in marked at a different time or something so it appears lower down in my time/date descending list. :/

From what I can see, Simon, forum notifications are taking 30-35 minutes to arrive.

Is it just backlog being cleared, Sam? Have you taken a look at the headers to see what clues there might be?
I have just sent one to myself from Gmail to my idnet com address, it took about 10 secs. ;D
Well, my experiment ended with 1&1 to 1&1 taking 15 second, but 1&1 to idnet.com and idnet.com to idnet.com/1&1 taking 43 minutes, while forum notifications have been taking 42 minutes. I've sent the data to support.

Just to clarify, this was happening before the events of last weekend, not as a result of it.
No, I believe it's an issue following the server problems.
Well, it was happening before as well, as I think I did mention at some point. :)
I'd not noticed a problem, or at least a consistent problem, Simon. There's always some propagation delay - I don't know, for example, how rapidly the forum software sends out the alerts.
Yes, could have been that, Rik. By the by really. It's doing it now, and that's what counts. :)
Who's counting? :)
I've just (21:08) received an email that was timestamped by the sender for 19:00:07 :(
My email is polling the server really slowly at the moment guess its more of the ongoing issues from the weekend :(
Sorry for the performance problems. Clunker isn't as powerful as Trevor. Once we get that main mail server back into the fray then performance should be back to normal. We hope to make some progress tomorrow.
Cheers
Simon
OK Simon, thanks for the update.
Great, thanks Simon. (http://pc-pals.com/pics/smileys/thumb.gif)
Then again, I've just had a flyer from Maplin arrive within seconds of being posted ;D
It's a funny old world on t'internet :P
Maplin were always good on service, Bill. :)
Gizoo obviously aren't- sent at 18:59, arrived 23:43 :-\
See, we have a discriminating mail server. ;)
Did Simon buy Clunker for Maplins? ::)
I'm getting Error Dx800CCC19 when I try to connect to idnet.com. Is there email server work going on at the moment and would that cause this message?
I keep getting time out error's also..
Must be working on things I guess.
I'm getting time out errors as well, I think today they were hoping to get Trevor back online hopefully, but I could be wrong :-\
Is anyone else having trouble with emails again this morning? The forum was down for me earlier, now the emails seem to have gone AWOL. :(
Yes... Timing out again..
Yes, see the Mail delays thread.
NOTE: The threads have now been merged - Rik

IDNet.com is (yet again) 'down'.
IDNet.co.uk continues as per normal.
So the email is *not* down - but the freebie service is ...
Oh, me too, but I started another thread before reading this one. (http://pc-pals.com/pics/smileys/red-face.gif) Perhaps someone would like to merge?

Part of the email system is down, would be a better way to phrase it, and mine has just kicked in again :)
As has been said, let's hope it's because Trevor is being resurrected, and soon all will be well in the garden of IDNet. (http://pc-pals.com/pics/smileys/pray.gif)
Can't believe it's down again. Am getting really annoyed with this e-mail problem. All my messages that I saved had gone when I did get back online on monday. Not helpful when I'm contacting suppliers for a wedding and their replies disappear >:( >:(
Apologies everyone, the mail server is struggling a little this morning whilst we restore all the mail that was 'lost' over the weekend. Which brings me onto the good news that after a lot of hard work and some help from some clever friends at 'Mythic Beasts' we've managed to retrieve the mail from Trevor. We're now busy restoring it to your live mail boxes - there's a lot of mail so it's likely to take most the day to complete.
Tim
Thanks for the update, Tim. That's very encouraging, and hopefully will put people anxious over lost emails a little more at ease. Keep us informed. :)
It's just emulating the Royal Mail then..just got my first post of the week, poor old Postie could hardly carry it all. ;D ;D
I'll do that - when I find it. :)
FYI: IDNet are working on the server today, so mail, web space and blogs will be a bit intermittent as the work progresses.
Rik, my idnet.com email is working again. :)
Mine is intermittent.
Mine has been working for the past 15 minutes or so, but I've not seen any influx of recovered mail - but then I don't know what was lost in the first place. :)
What would be best in the long term is to have Trevor, the original server fixed, things may finally work as planned then, as it is getting to be annoying now for people who do not pay for idnet.co.uk email addresses. >:(
Yes, mine is now working, but there are still some emails still to filter through. Hopefully things will catch up during the day.
Indeed Simon, but is this all work on Clunker? Because that's not really sorting the issue at the end of the day and its reliability may be in question under load possibly :-\

It isn't annoying me Gary, I only use the free IDNet.com for things that are not of any great importance.
The only thing that bugs me, as I have said before, is the Status Page not reflecting the situation accurately. ;)

Did I get the wrong impression that they are trying to get everything back on to Trevor? I think it's understood that Clunker isn't as powerful as Trevor, which is why I thought they were trying to restore Trevor.
As I understand it, they're trying to recover the data from Trevor to Clunker today. Then, I believe that Trevor is to be restored. I may, however, have the wrong end of the long wooden thingy. :)

True I use other email addresses as well Inactive, but from my point of view being with a new ISP just over a month, handing out new email addresses for friends only for them to fail is annoying. I know it will get fixed and Simon and Tim are more on the ball than most major ISP's which is great, but to find at the moment a continuing issue each day is starting to bug me a little to be honest :( The status page is a pain and there seems some disparity between pay for addresses and free ones here, Simon has said hopefully that will be changed soon, because as it stands it seems designed for business users, or people who pay for their email.

Fair enough Gary, it is unfortunate that this has happened as so many newish customers have joined up with IDNet, I have been here for 11 months and it is the first blip on an otherwise 100% service track record for me.
All e.mails go down from time to time, that is why I never depend on one.
I'm sure things will soon be sorted.
I have to say that I'm a little disappointed in the progress of this problem... I appreciate that Simon, Tim et al are working hard to restore the service, but I'd have expected a comparable server to be on hand to quickly swap in when a fault occurred- they're not that expensive, surely?
I'm also prepared to be proved wrong, of course...
Well I for one am very impressed, Simon and crew have restore all my mail and saved folders. I'd all but given up hope. Well done to you guys, great recovery. :)

Hi All
I share your frustration with the current idnet.com email situation and apologise for the reduced level of performance. I hope you can understand that we had to pick the best available candidate for temporary replacement server at short notice in order to keep the mail service up and at least functional. Other candidate servers would have required work to move their 'day-job' functions elsewhere to make room for mail. Clunker happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and got the job.
I'm delighted that we managed to extract the mail spool from Trevor - so no mail has been lost at all.
We're still working at repairing Trevor to bring him back into service at full speed and performance (which will include proper spam filtering). We'll need to take the idnet.com service off-line for a period when the time comes in order to transfer the service from Clunker to Trevor. This is nescessary in order to ensure that mail is sent to one and not both servers. Will let you know when that is scheduled.
Regards
Simon

Thanks Simon,
It means a hell of a lot when we are kept informed of events, and pre-warned when downtime is expected, which takes a lot of the heat out of the situation. It's also superb that you have managed to save the data on the mail server, as concerns over lost emails may now be alleviated.
Keep up the good work, and best of luck with getting Trevor back on his feet! :)

Is there still an email server problem? I only joined IDNet on Friday, got an email confirming that it was active, but since then I haven't been able to login to it. "login failed" every time I try it via both webmail and outlook express.
Some new customers seem to be having problems, see the thread here (http://www.idnetters.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=3936.msg60390#msg60390).
If you are having password problems, there is little we can do in open forum to help, so I would suggest a call to support in the morning. I have alerted them to the issue.
Is your ADSL connection OK?
Thanks Rik. My ADSL is fine. It's just my email which I can't access.
That's good, I know that BT didn't complete one migration on Friday, so was worried you might have the same problem.
That was my migration, Rik. Tim spoke to my son on Saturday morning and we finally got online late Saturday afternoon. On Friday afternoon I got the email address/password sorted, populated my address book and sent out an email to my contacts with my new address. Since then, I haven't been able to access the email.
No, the one I'm thinking of wasn't you and still hasn't been completed. BT seem to have been having a bad day on Friday. :(
If you go to your accounts page and set up a new email account, can you than access that, or your web or blog space?
Rik - I have just set up another email account as a test, but the same problem occurred. Login failed.
That seems to be the pattern, and it's affecting people who migrated in towards the end of last week as far as I can see. :(
Give support a call in the morning, I'm sure they'll sort it quickly.
Thank you so much for your help. It's nice to be able to get some info from someone in the know. Better than premium rate phone calls to my previous ISP.
Sadly, in this instance, I don't know enough - but there has been a clear pattern emerge, it's something the forum is good at establishing. I can then make sure that those that need to know see the threads, so hopefully, we can get you up and running just as soon as possible.
You do know it's a freefone call to IDNet, don't you? Much better than premium rate. :)
Where we can help more in the forum is on general connection issues, speed etc, where we don't need account information to address issues.
