Title: Lift and shift?
Post by: GameR on Sep 21, 2007, 17:38:55
hi does anyone know if idnet gets bt to do this?

If it's necessary, yes. What's your problem?

well am getting loads of packet loss allways happens same time of day and lasts till late at night which aint that great if ya into playing games, had some prob with other isp which they allways said they couldnt find a problem anywhere and they would do nothing about it.ive had bb for the last 7 yrs no packetloss at all well apart from the first time the exchange was enabled for bb for 3 months was verybad untill bt upgraded the vp,but it seems to be happening again, and its allways between 11am till about 10pm everyday.Bt phoned me last week and said that we have done some tweaks to the exchange and you should notice a diff in speed in your connection, well speed aint never been bad just the packetloss part the exchange is on green and since i join idnet apart from one day at the weekend the speed is allways the same and ping times.Like i said the packetloss is to bad to play games as it cause`s a lot of lag it happens in any server for a lot of diff games and lots of diff host if aint even if its just one its them all.

What are your line stats like, what degree of packet loss are we talking about, do you know if interleaving is on or not?
Title: Re: Lift and shift?
Post by: GameR on Sep 22, 2007, 10:44:59
Its on fastpath heres the line stats :
Operation Data   Upstream    Downstream
Noise Margin         15dB              11dB
Attenuation          27dB              26dB
these never really change no matter wot time of day it is,and for the packetloss it makes games unplayable,i have also removed the face plate and have just tried that and its still the same also tried it just with the adsl line in with no filter and nothing else connected still the same.

What's your d/s sync speed? Can you quantify the packet loss?
Title: Re: Lift and shift?
Post by: GameR on Sep 22, 2007, 10:57:57
Sync speed is  8128 and 832 Kbps.ever since i have had bb its never synced at lower speeds.

I suspect that you are going to have problems getting a fault accepted by BT then. Have a word with support, explain your problem and see what they can come up with.

Sounds to me like he is having to wait while his packets are being de-fragmented.

RWin - MTU problem??
Title: Re: Lift and shift?
Post by: Rik on Sep 22, 2007, 17:08:31
Always possible, Mo. GameR - have you checked MTU & RWIN?
Title: Re: Lift and shift?
Post by: GameR on Sep 22, 2007, 22:46:36
yes ive played around with it and check it with broadband reports and thats says everything is in range.ive tried 1430 1458 and 1478 all the same.
Title: Re: Lift and shift?
Post by: GameR on Sep 23, 2007, 00:02:47
anyone got any idea`s on which to try for mtu and rwin settings as the broadband site is in usa maybe that could be a prob.
Title: Re: Lift and shift?
Post by: Rik on Sep 23, 2007, 10:11:18
Try 1458 for MTU (leave your router at 1500), and adjust RWIN appropriately. Miriam recommends 1458, while Simon goes for 1500. I've used both with little difference, but if you've got packet loss, the smaller value may help.

It's worth doing, as the last thing you want to risk is a BT bill. Have you got rid of the ring wire?
Title: Re: Lift and shift?
Post by: GameR on Sep 25, 2007, 11:56:15
no i dint think i had any need to do so as the stats on router was good,is it easy to go back in when removed how do u do it?
Title: Re: Lift and shift?
Post by: Rik on Sep 25, 2007, 12:02:03
Undo the screws and lift off the face plate. With a small pair of pliers, gently lift the wire on terminal 3 from the IDc connection. To replace it, you need a tool, about 99p from Maplin, B&Q etc. Repeat at every socket, not just the one you are using for the router.

ok i have took it off but am only see 2 wires one is brown and others white  is this right?

Is that the master socket? I don't recognise the type... If there are only two wires, I'd assume they are the exchange pair, particularly as they are connected to screw terminals.
Title: Re: Lift and shift?
Post by: GameR on Sep 25, 2007, 12:46:43
yes i only got one in the house and there is only 2 wires but if the 2 are for the exchange why does the phone still ring with out the filter in,i thought when u remove the ring wire the phone wont ring unless u got a filter in?
Title: Re: Lift and shift?
Post by: Rik on Sep 25, 2007, 12:51:44
Most modern phones actually don't need the wire, the extra current is really a legacy from the days when phones had electro-mechanical bells. IAC, that must be the master socket, so the circuitry to produce the ring voltage is built into it.

Post by: GameR on Sep 25, 2007, 12:52:33
i have removed the brown wire i still can connect to internet but the phone dont work lol surly one wire cant just be for the bb side of thing and other for phone?
Title: Re: Lift and shift?
Post by: Rik on Sep 25, 2007, 12:55:18
You require both wires to be connected. The reason ADSL continues to work is down to the frequencies it employs, it can actually jump a gap in the connection, while the voice side cannot. (Though I'd expect your connection to be impaired.)

yes ur right m8 i checked the router stats and i was only getting 1123kbs and 64kbs :P well ive learned something to day hehe its all wired back iin and speed is back to normal and phones working,ah well it was worth a try anyway and thx for yer help mate and ur quick repleys ty,am gona get this other router and give that a go with the new cables.

well new cables and a diff router didnt work still  got the same probs as before and my net speed is now just over 1mb,that i think has to be when i removed the wire from the faceplate and connected at a lower synce rate, that should sort it self out,but am at a loss on the packetloss is all about and pages not loading up when its showing me connected to me then suddenly it come back its self that happened about 10 mins ago :(
Title: Re: Lift and shift?
Post by: Rik on Sep 26, 2007, 00:05:09
The removed wire will certainly have depressed your profile, but that should recover automatically. If pages aren't loading, I'd be inclined to look at your MTU. What value are you using?
Title: Re: Lift and shift?
Post by: GameR on Sep 26, 2007, 11:50:39
am using 1458 and kept the router at 1500 as u said, its like the router is still connected to the to the net but stop showing a page i dont even get this page couldnt be displayed its all white, and if i wait say for about a few mins is just comes back when i tried it again. Its just not for websites i could be downloading then it just drops to 0 then after few mins or even 30 mins it will just start again when it drops like that and if i do a ping test thats when it comes up with way high ping times at 1600ms>like i said before the router never drops sync nor does the line stats.

I think the best thing would be to get support to test your connection. They will be able to see what's happening, where we can only guess.

If you take a look here (http://www.idnetters.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=3776.msg56292#msg56292), there's an indication of the kind of information they can give you.

Gamer, you don't say which OS you are using.  If it's XP, and you have DRTCP, try this;

Leave the router MTU at 1500

In XP set RWin to 268640

Window Scaling 'On'

Path MTU Discovery 'On'

All others to 'Default'

Adapter MTU to 1500

Save these settings and Exit

Re-start the computer (NOT the router)

See if it improves things
