Post by: Broadback on Aug 10, 2020, 15:18:28
I had a hard disc crash. I have recovered most but cannot get the emails to work. I have contacted my email supplier who gave me the settings, which are thae same as that automatic ones. I use Mozilla Thunderbird under  Windows10. Any suggestions please? i am getting desperate.

Sending of password for user "email address" did not succeed. Mail server imap.stackmail.com responded: Authentication failed. when attempting to receive.

So, that would suggest a wrong password.

Did you put in your email address? It looks like you're trying to log in as user "email address".

Now, where's that Any key?

I guess you've already done this but .... T/bird account settings

Account type: IMAP.
Incoming mail server: imap.stackmail.com.
Outgoing mail server: smtp.stackmail.com.
Incoming server port (IMAP): 993.
Use the following type of encrypted connection: SSL.
Outgoing server port (SMTP): 465 (or 587)
Use the following type of encrypted connection: TLS.

Make sure all other boxes include user details as required. You've probably already validated your password using webmail - assuming stackmail has a webmail portal?
Have they switched to using oauth2 as well?

As part of the recovery, did you copy over your old profile, which may have been a bad idea if it was broken in the crash?

Re-enter your password, checking that you don't inadvertently put a space before or after it.

go to https://stackmail.com/

Enter your email address and password

If you can log in to your email then you know your password is correct.

If you cannot then it is not correct.

This assumes that you are using stackmail.com for your email which seems to be the case

Sadly non of them work. But I am certain that the email addresses are correct as I can log into my email supplier with them.

OK - so, is your stackmail account provided through a service provider of some sort?

It seems to be used by hosting companies, development platforms etc.

You can log in to your email supplier, but the same credentials fail in Tbird with a new profile?

Sorry but this is normally a dead simple "I've forgotten my password" process, what's the problem?
