Title: Microsoft Windows 10 cr*p!
Post by: Broadback on Jan 01, 2017, 10:30:05
Morning all, I've spent most of Christmas/New Year installing a new computer. Going OK, but thee is cr*p being put on by Microsoft. In particular Microsoft Edge keeps popping up also a software program expecting me to pay for driver updates. How can I get rid of these please? Secondly I am looking for a cheap speaker to connect to my PC, any recommendations? Nothing fancy required, hopefully simple install.

With regards speakers, if you want something really basic, and are not too worried about top notch sound quality, then these have good reviews:

There's a whole lot of stuff here regarding ads in Windows 10, and how to control / stop them:

But if these are popping up in your browser, then this may suggest that you already have adware on the machine, which you may be able to remove with this:

Thanks Simon, I've ordered the speakers, they seem ideal for my use. As regards the software I will tackle that at a later date!

To get rid of Edge you need to set a different browser as your default, such as Firefox or Opera. Alternatively, just revert to Internet Explorer. You'll find it somewhere like Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories. Right click to pin to Start or Taskbar, fire it up then set as default.

As Simon said, download and install Malwarebytes (5 mins), let it run, maybe an hour, delete what it finds then reboot, hopefully then no more pop up.

Have you been into Settings - DefaultApps and set Chrome as the default as below?
